Ambulatory Experience

Research & Scholarly Activity

To give our residents education and training in an outpatient setting, all of our programs see patients in one of our four
GME Ambulatory practices. These practices are led by Aprile Burt-Harp, RN, Administrative Unit Manager; Melanie
Neville, RN BSN, Administrative Clinical Manager; Leslie Reich, RN BSN, Administrative Clinical Manager; and Keri
Wilson, RN BSN, Administrative Clinical Manager.

Scholarly activity is an important component of Graduate Medical Education at Mount Carmel. Last academic year
Mount Carmel had more than 135 resident physicians and faculty and almost 60 other healthcare professionals
conducting IRB-approved research across the system. The Mount Carmel Office of Research Affairs, with a staff
of more than a dozen Mount Carmel colleagues, provided the full spectrum of research support to GME residents
and faculty, including assistance with research study design, IRB approval, data collection, biostatistical analysis, and
manuscript preparation. The office also coordinated 23 new industry- and NIH-sponsored clinical trials and enrolled
almost 520 patients onto new and existing studies.

Residents and faculty made over 29,000 patient visits in these practices in FY13. FY13 was an exciting year with the
implementation of an EMR, remodeling of MCW clinic space, and relocation of Internal Medicine to an improved, larger
ambulatory space.
The MCSA Family Medicine Center and Metro West Internal Medicine offices have attested for Meaningful Use
with their new NextGen EMR. The EMR has been in place for over a year in both of these and has enabled safer,
contiguous care with the opportunity for improved population health. Both sites are evaluating implementing the care
model of Patient Centered Medical Home to serve our population and educate our residents. Mount Carmel West
Outpatient OB clinics have added a Welcome Home nurse to the OB Interview process who is also trained as a
Lactation Counselor. This will help educate patients on breastfeeding early in their OB care. This nurse also introduces
the concept of a visiting nurse after delivery and offers a weekly breastfeeding support group to our patients. The
surgery clinic continues to provide exceptional care at both the MCW and MCE sites with a planned expansion at MCE
during FY14. Residents serving patients in the Ortho clinic benefited from a remodeled x-ray room and digital imaging.

The Office of Research Affairs provided oversight for the annual resident research lectures series and held its inaugural
Research Day in 2013. This event served as a forum to showcase research and other scholarly activity conducted
by Mount Carmel’s Graduate Medical Education Residency Programs. Presentations were made in both podium and
poster format. This event featured specific examples of residents’ scholarly activities, evidence of how research is an
integral part of training in a variety of residency programs, and examples of how residents’ experiences can provide a
valuable contribution to our organization and to medical literature.
