Registering Qualified Doctors P atients trust doctors with their lives. They need to have confidence that doctors are competent. It is a core responsibility of this College to ensure the public that only qualified, competent and ethical physicians are licensed to practise medicine in this province. As part of our review, we look at an applicant’s education, training and experience. We also ensure there are no concerns about behaviour, health or performance that could prevent the physician from safely caring for patients. It is a core responsibility of this College to ensure the public that only qualified, competent and ethical physicians are licensed to practise medicine in this province. Our job, of course, is to ensure that individual physicians are qualified to practise. But in recent years, we have also looked closely at system issues that would prevent members of the public from receiving quality care. For many years, for example, we worked with government, medical schools and others to find workable solutions to physician resource challenges in Ontario. One result of this collaboration was the development of College policies that provided greater opportunities to physicians to qualify to practise medicine, without compromising our existing standards of registration. While we are pleased with the progress made, there continues to be a strong need for physician resource planning. Annual Report 2013 5
