ENDODONTICS—So much more
than training root canal specialists
It is always a thrill to reconnect with
former students and colleagues – to
see how LMC Dental Endodontics
(ENDO) training has impacted their
lives as well as the lives of others
in their communities speaks to
the strength of this LMC Dental
specialty program. There is no better
testimonial to our educational and
service-minded values than for those
who we have taught to become the
teachers. Such was the case in the
2013/2014 residency year when Drs.
Joseph Chu, Howard Kang and Farid
Brian Shaikh joined me to teach at
an LMC Dental sponsored ENDO
Symposium in Hawaii in March,
2014. The well-attended CE event
garnered so many accolades from
all attendees, urging LMC to plan
on duplicating the CE initiative. In
April, we had another opportunity to
spend time with LMC Dental ENDO
alumni, residents and faculty as well
as colleagues who teach and practice
in our field when LMC Dental
held a reception at the American
Association of Endodontists Annual
Session (AAE) at which over 40
colleagues had the chance to
reconnect.

CODA Approved
CODA reviewers approved the Endo
Program without recommendations
when we underwent a site visit
during the 2013/2014 residency
training year. The 25-month
program, which was established
in 2005 at LMC, is a blend of both
hospital and dental school based
training. In 2009, a training site was
added in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at
the University of Puerto Rico School
of Dental Medicine (UPR), making
LMC Dental the first Endodontic
program to offer multiple training
sites. Eleven ENDO residents
graduated from the program in July,
2014 some of whom have opened
solo practices and others who have
remained in public health dentistry.
In 2013, 110,000 endodontic,
restorative and implant
procedures were performed
valued at $27M.
Robert Goldberger, DDS
Program Director, Endodontics
Dr. Joseph Chu, Alum:
““I could not have asked for a
better experience during my
2 years in Lutheran Medical
Center’s endodontic residency
program. Upon graduation, I
was well-prepared to meet the
challenges of private practice
clinical dentistry. During my first
year with LMC Dental as an AEGD
resident, the program, faculty
and staff well-prepared me for
my subsequent specialization
in Endodontics. Having multispecialty post-graduate
programs within Lutheran
Medical Center enabled the best
quality comprehensive treatment
care for the patients in the
community. In addition, located
in the thriving city of Brooklyn
and minutes from Manhattan
was an added bonus.”
