GENERAL PRACTICE RESIDENCY
(GPR)—Developing Super-Generalists!
I am delighted to report that our
program celebrated its 40th year
anniversary this year. It’s an honor to
be a part of a vast network that has
improved the lives of so many who
live in underserved communities
while at the same time ensuring that
future practitioners are equipped
with the most up-to-date skills to
serve their patients. Since 1974, LMC
Dental’s General Practice Residency
(GPR) 1-year (second year optional)
program has helped hundreds of
dentists become “super generalists”
through intense and diversified
training at LMC. We were able to
showcase the success of our program
during the 2013/2014 residency
year when we underwent a CODA
site visit and were approved with
no recommendations. Throughout
their year as a GPR resident, our
trainees work one-on-one with a
team of top specialists and general
dentists, through all phases of
dentistry including rotations in
family medicine, anesthesia and the
emergency room.
Our residents gain invaluable
experience as they treat a large
patient population that allows
them to develop expertise in
providing care to socially and
economically disadvantaged cultural
groups while working in state-ofthe-art facilities in a fast-paced
urban environment. In addition
to emphasizing comprehensive
dental care, the program integrates
medical applications into dentistry.
I am pleased to announce that
we graduated 23 residents in the
2013/2014 residency year—all
well-equipped with the skills to
excel in the practice of dentistry. In
the academic year starting July 1,
2014, 16 PGY1 and 2 PGY 2 residents
entered our GPR Program.
A Successful CODA site visit in

Chinese. The program did not

‘outstanding achievement’ at LMC Dental’s

Dr. Sagar Shah, 2013 GPR
Graduate:
“By selecting to attend Lutheran
Medical Center, you’ve chosen
in my mind, one of the most
comprehensive general practice
residencies certainly in New York,
but also in the country. It comes
at a price—however—it will
not be an easy year. But it’s just
that—only one year. Make the
absolute best of it.”
