THE RAGING FISHERMAN: Magical Durban By: Grant Hewitt T he skipper is usually positioned at the helm already, the inadvertent luxury he has earned as captain of the crew who now push the boat to depth, doing their best to not let the chilly waters reach the body parts not deserved of such abuse- this never works. The rehearsed dance lasts less than a minute and before you know it the boat is in motion, facing east and the prospects of an epic day lay ahead. It’s at this moment that the horizon takes shape, broken only by the blinding glare of the rising sun dotted by the silhouettes of the recreational fishing fleet who are already gathering bait. The memorable scene is encompassed by the amphitheatrically enhanced back-drop of the glowing city sky-line and it is then that the apparent truth hits you, you are about to fish the off-shore haunts of Durban……. Durban is by no means a world-renowned fishery, but to the local east-coasters, this is what we know, what we trust and what we enjoy. To me, Durban is a completely underrated off-shore fishery and its strength lies in its versatility and options year round.
