The current log leaders, team Thermocline, focussed on two key areas to secure a five fish limit of 8.8kg, and in so doing second place on the day. Herman Geldenhuys and Jannie Stander cast Norman DD22 crankbaits and slowly fished Zoom Super Flukes over a deep underwater hump. Their other major tactic was pitching soft plastic craws and flukes at big isolated stumps in water shallower than 6 feet. “Biggest Bass”: Charl Carey with the biggest bass of the day, a slab of a fish at 4.39kg. The second biggest bass caught in Lowveld Bass Trail history. “ Frank and Ben Gottschalk of third placed team Wittus Angling concentrated on shallow points comprised of gravel as well as sand flats near to drop-offs. They incorporated various baits on their way to a bag of 8.075kg including spinnerbaits, Yum Money Minnows and black weightless fluke-style plastics. ” The second biggest bass of the tournament was caught by team Hazyview Midas. This fish of 4.385kg helped them to fourth place with a bag of 7.435kg, just shy of the top three. Hannes van Wyk and Nico Heyns picked up a lot of fish to the right hand side of the palisade fence in deep water of about 65 feet. They saw big fish in this area on their Lowrance fishfinders but only managed to get smaller bass to bite. They stayed on that spot until about 12pm before moving to the dam wall for about an hour with no success. They moved back to the deeper water and on Hannes’s first cast his line went tight on a big fish. They made the decision to weigh the 4.385kg bass immediately and returned to the spot straight away... Two casts after returning to this area Hannes was again on to a proper bass of 2.4kg. Both of their bigger fish came on a drop shot rigged Strike King KVD Dream Shot.
