COMMUNITY Justice for Kian rally MEMBERS of Migrante Australia formed a rally in front of the Philippine Consulate General front gate on Wentworth Avenue in Sydney’s CBD recently in protest against the killing by local police of 17-year-old high school student Kian Loyd de los Santos on suspicion of illegal drug possession. Their placards called on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to stop extra-judicial killings. One sign called for suspension of Australia’s military aid to the Philippines. In a Reuters news report from Bangkok, Australian journalist Lindsay Murdoch said the killing of Kian had “sparked an outcry” from Catholic church leaders and prompted powerful politicians allied to the President to set up congressional inquiry into extra-judicial killings. n Filipino organisation receives $5000 grant THIRTY-ONE local volunteer groups in Auburn and Bankstown areas received Community Volunteer awards from Federal MP for Blaxland, Jason Clare recently. Among the recipients of the awards and funding grants were the Auburn-based community volunteer organisations Auburn Small Community Organisation Network Inc (ASCON) and the Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO). ASCON chairwoman Cen Amores received the award on behalf of ASCON, and director Glorina Papaioannou accepted the award for APCO as one of the signatories of the Volunteer Grants funding application. Penafrancia fiesta at Penrith THE 2017 Penafrancia Fiesta high Mass will be officiated by Vatican Ambassador to Australia, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, together with seven priests at 9am on Saturday, September 16 at St Nicholas of Myra church, on High Street, Penrith. The holy rosary and novena to Divino Rostro and to Our Lady of Penafrancia will precede the concelebrated Mass, followed by a fluvial procession of the Virgin image in a Pagoda at 12 noon at the Nepean River wharf area of Tench Reserve, then lunch fellowship and multicultural entertainment until 4pm. Devotees of INA are invited to proceed to Tench Reserve wharf after the Mass to join in the fluvial procession on board the Nepean Belle cruise boat which will last for about 30-45 minutes. Then there will be free lunch-sharing prepared by ADOLP Inc for all devotees and guests follow. The Australian devotees of Our Lady of Penafrancia, a Sydney-based community group, will showcase the 11th year of the Penafrancia Fiesta that provides opportunities for people to make new friends or get together with old ones and to express their devotion through a monthly novena, Mass and annual fiesta. Multicultural performers are the Los Carmonas Cultural Dance, Spain; Sydney Sonata Singers, Himig Sandiwa Chorale, Workers Hubertus Volkstanzgruppe Cultural Dance, Germany; Abirami Natya Shestra Cultural Dance India, Philippines Cordilleras, Luzon, PASSCI Cultural Dance, Visayas, and PLCAA Cultural Dancers, Mindanao. This year’s special guests are the Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Minda Calaguian-Cruz, MP Tanya Davies, MP Stuart Laurence Ayres, Penrith City Mayor John Thain, Consul Marford Angeles, and Consul Melanie Diano. The annual Penafrancia Fiesta will honour the Filipino- Australian community in partnership with the NSW Government's commitment to a cohesive and inclusive society in which cultures, languages and religions of all citizens are accepted and appreciated. n A fashion designer featured in a trade forum at Consulate THE Philippine Consulate General in Sydney held a trade forum attended by Philippine diplomats, tourism and trade dignitaries and the media recently.
