GOLF
Only the caddy can putt
THE Filipino Media Golf Cup has adopted
the System 36 format for this year’s one-day
competition for a more level playing field.
The competition will be played at the usual
Hudson Park golf course in Strathfield NSW on
Sunday, November 18, 2018, with tee-off time of
8am.
It will be sixth year of the annual competition
which began in 2013 as organised by members of
the Filipino Press Group of Sydney.
Proceeds go to the ‘Fighting Fund’ of the
International Federation of Journalists to assist
families of journalists killed ‘in action’ around the
world, such as news reporters murdered in the
infamous Ampatuan Massacre in Mindanao.
The System 36 format is a same-day
handicapping scoring method that allows golfers
who don’t have handicap indexes to play in
tournaments requiring use of net scores.
What levels the playing field even further is that,
at this Filipino Media Golf Cup, only the non-golfer
playing alongside the golfer is allowed to putt
when the ball lands on the green.
Winner of the competition in 2013 was Ferdie
Francisco playing solo at the time, followed by
golfer Tony Vivero and putting partner Mon Carpo
in 2014, Roberto Pangilinan and putter Michelle
Baltazar in 2015, Kate Andres and putter Marilie
Bomediano in 2016, and Jun Gonzales andputter
Cora Francisco in 2017.
