THE success of Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts (KCCE) founded by
Filipino-Australian Eddie Atacador last year did not escape the attention of
Knox City Council in Victoria.
The Council invited KCCE to organize a Chess Open tournament at the Knox
Seniors Festival on October 8-20.
A highlight was a chess ‘simul’ competition featuring KCCE’s Arvin del

Rosario simultaneously taking on seven senior chess players and successfully
demonstrating his prowess in less than two hours.
Arvin is an IT specialist and a former instructor at the University of Bulacan
who who recently arrived to join his wife, Anne, a registered nurse in Australia.
What began as a simple activity in a game of chess between Atacador and
nephew Rick to pass the time developed into the KCCE in October 2017.
Knox City Council seniors support officer Linda Keenahan said the efforts of
Atacador and the KCCE in creating a harmonious environment through the
game of chess had helped in paving the way for seniors, men particularly, to
find a challenging recreational activity and an opportunity to socialise.
