New GonGen hits the ground running
ONE day after her arrival
in Sydney from the
Philippines, the 18th
Consul General for NSW,
Maria Teresa L. Taguiang
attended the Philippine
Community Council NSW
Philippine Independence
Day Ball at Sydney’s Four
Seasons Hotel.

The following day she was at the golf for
the Philippine Airlines Kalayaan Cup, and
on Saturday, June 16, at the Pista Sa Nayon
of the Alliance of Philippine Community
Organisations (PCC-NSW).
She then hosted a Filipino community
gathering for the Consulate's official
Independence Day celebration.
Immediately after the celebration at
the Consulate, Radio Tagumpay presenters
Jinky Marsh and Violi Calvert interviewed
Ms Taguiang.
“I am pleasantly surprised to know that
Osaka and Sydney are very similar in terms
of their demographics with over 100,000
in Filipino populace in my јurisdiction,” she
said.
“It will be about the same energy
needed for me to service all of our
countrymen here.
“In comparison, Јapan is a very Asian
country while Australia is a western country.

They may be different in character,
nevertheless, Filipinos wherever they are
have the same heart. Pusong Filipino.
Ms Taguiang held the position of Consul
General in Osaka, Japan, from June 2012 to
December 2016
She was also the permanent
representative to United Nations Economic
and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific
(UNESCAP) Central Depository of Armenia
(CDA) in the absence of the Ambassador to
Japan at the time.
Other foreign service posts held by new
new Consul-General in Sydney were Deputy
to the Ambassador and Consul General,
CDA in the absence of the Ambassador,
Philippine Embassy Abu Dhabi (February
2006 – September 2007), First Secretary
then Career Minister Alternate Delegate
of the Philippine Delegation to the UN
Security Council Philippine Mission to the
United Nations (September 2001 – 20060,
Second Secretary and Consul, Philippine
Embassy Tokyo (May 1995 – May 1998),
Philippine Embassy and Mission to the
European Community, Brussels (November
1992 – May 1995), Third Secretary and Vice
Consul (1992-1994), Third Secretary and
Vice Consul, Acting as Charge’ d’ Affaires,
ad interim (CDA) from August to November
1992, Philippine Embassy in Belgrade.
Ms Taguiang completed a Bachelor of
Science degree in business economics and
a Master of Arts degree in economics at the
University of the Philippines.
In 1983-1985, she took up graduate
research as a Japanese Ministry of
Education scholar at the Graduate School of
Consul General Maria Teresa L. Taguiang with Minister for Multiculturalism and Minister for Disability Services Ray

Economics, Tohoku University, Sendai City,
Japan.
She then undertook the Evening
Program for Working Students earning a
Bachelor of Laws degree at the College of
Law at the University of the Philippines in
1986-1992.
Ms Taguiang continued law studies at
the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
in Tufts University, Boston, USA and
completed Master of Arts degree in
International Relations in 2006-2008. n
