A bittersweet reminder on Australia Day
AUSTRALIA DAY is when we who come from the Philippines are reminded that we are Australian . To some of us , believe me , it is a bittersweet message .

Our children , even those who were born in the Philippines , have no problem taking it all in . They need less reminding .
But to some of us who loved being Filipino ; sang the Philippine anthem at school , danced , cried and laughed through our youth and adulthood it is almost next to impossible not to add “ Filipino ” to the word “ Australian ” to describe ourselves on Australia Day .

But Australian we are , and we love saying it too . Because we came to this country to join the Australian community knowingly .
And we were accepted and shown the way in to take our place in Australian society .
Indeed , Australia Day to some of us is also a day of thanksgiving .
We thank Australia for making us ‘ Australian ’. •
