We have just discarded the ‘ Juan Tamad ’ image

WE remember with fondness the cartoon character of our youth in Manila , Juan Tamad . That ’ s ‘ Lazy Johnny ’ to you .
In fact , if I remember correctly , there was even a movie playing on the character ‘ Juan Tamad ’.
I can still picture a cartoon of Juan as he lay on his back under a ‘ duhat ’ ( blackberry ) fruit tree , his mouth wide open , waiting for a ripe and delicious ‘ duhat ’ to leave the branch and drop into his mouth for his meal . The image , to me anyway , was a dig at some of our Filipino country folk who were too lazy to do any physical work .
As we grew older , many of us regarded people who dragged their feet and chose the flimsiest excuses to make ‘ lakwacha ’ – “ take a sickie ” – males in particular , as “ Juan Tamad ”.
Fast forward 2018 : We read in a daily newspaper

recently that a global study showed that January 9 , 1952 - March 26 , 2018 migrant kids were “ trouncing their Australian-born classmates ” because they aimed higher and worked harder at school .
The news report said that , in Australia , students born in the Philippines – and in India and China – were “ 6 per cent to 9 per cent more likely than Aussie-born kids to attain baseline academic proficiency ”.
Further , the report said that migrant children in Australia reported “ lower levels of bullying , were less anxious about school work , and had a greater sense of belonging than Australian-born kids ”.
The findings were based on the OECD ’ s Program for International Student Assessment which tested half a million 15-year-old students from 72 countries in maths , reading and science ”. Well now , how do you like that ? We didn ’ t bring Juan Tamad to Australia with us after all . •
