MIASCOR’s fiasco
THE Manila International Airport Authority
has been swift in announcing its non-renewal of
its contract with MIASCOR Groundhandling
Corporation following a recent incident of
baggage pilferage, where a returning OFW
from Canada lost P82,000 worth of items at
Clark International Airport.
The incident had gotten the ire of President
Rodrigo Duterte himself. Upon learning of it,
he apologized to the OFW and told him that
the government would pay for whatever losses
he incurred and that the perpetrators would be
punished.
The President said, “I would demand that
there be justice instantly. Whoever is the service
provider there, you terminate the contract and
look for another one.”
And that’s when MIAA announced the
non-renewal of MIASCOR’s contract set to
expire on March 31 as it gave the company 60
days to vacate airport premises.
MIASCOR has already apologized and
compensated the victim, and it now appealing
to the President to hear its side of the story as
it asks for forgiveness for the mistakes of some
of their employees.
MIASCOR president Fidel Herman
Reyes went to the extent of using the company’s
4,000 employees in seeking sympathy, saying
they’d lose their jobs. He also cited MIASCOR’s
alleged good standing of 40 years as service
provider.
But despite MIASCOR’s apology, it
cannot be denied that it was under their watch
that the OFW had suffered the inconvenience
and the heartbreak.
The President cannot be blamed if he
decides to not renew the contract of MIASCOR.
After all, airports serve as the ]window of
visitors in the country, and incidents like this
one can ]leave the country’s image in tatters.

MAGANDANG
ARAW.
KAHIT alam kong mas
komportable kang makipag-
usap sa wikang Ingles, hindi ako
magpapaumanhin sa paggamit
ng Filipino. Isa siguro iyan
sa dahilan kung bakit kahit
marami kang sinasabi, hindi
ka nakakaugnay sa masang
Pilipino. Makulay ang wika
mo, pero mas angkop iyan sa
Texas kaysa sa Batangas. Iba
talaga ang dating ng “putang
ina mo” sa “son of a bitch”.
Tagahanga mo ako
noon. At hindi ako nagsisisi.
Na noong eleksyong 1992,
kahit hindi miyembro ng
People’s Reform Party ay
nagparami at namigay ako
ng propaganda para manalo
kang pangulo. Na kinabisado
ko ang mga paborito mong
sabihin – halimbawa, na “Para
magtagumpay ang masama,
sapat nang walang gawin ang
mabubuti.” Na pinahalagahan
ko ang mga personalidad na
nadikit sa iyo noon: Herman
Tiu Laurel, Isabel Ongpin,
Antonio Leviste, at kahit si
Ariel Rivera.
Kung may naniniwala
ngayon na ikaw ang nanalo sa
eleksyong iyon at dinaya ka ng
baril, maton, at ginto ni Fidel
Ramos na inindorso ni Cory
Aquino, kasama ako sa kanila.
Hanggang ngayon, paniwala
kong kailangang labanan
ang katiwalian sa gobyerno
– ang isyu ng kampanya mo
noong 1992. Ang pagkatalo
mo ay bahagi ng simula ng
pagkawala ng tiwala ko sa
gobyerno. Dinaya ka. Marumi
silang lumaban: pinakawalan
pa nila si Manoling Morato
para ipagkalat na baliw ka
