I’ve built and tuned so many
supercharged engines over the
years, I’ve lost count. And every
time I build a Rootsblown engine,
the one thing I look forward to the
least is setting up the carburetor
linkage. If the engine is running
just a single carb, that’s easy. Dual
carbs mounted inline is almost just
as easy. But I’m talking about side-
mounted double pumpers. They’re
the kind of carburetors that work
best on blown engines. They also
look the coolest sticking through
your hood what with all of the rod
ends and stainless bolts and fuel
lines and anodized tube nuts running
all around the top of the blower.
But setting up all that stuff can be
a pain. The blower manufacturers
aren’t too much help here either.
The instructions they send out with
the linkage kits usually just include
a parts list, a photo of the linkage
set up on a blower, and maybe an
exploded diagram showing how all
the pieces go together. But that’s
only marginally helpful, especially
if you’ve never done it before. Over
the years I’ve fi gured out a few tips
and tricks that will increase your
chances of setting up carburetor
linkage right the fi rst time—and
maybe even help you to enjoy the
process.
