Two Years of Accomplishments P These national institutions will also attract global talent, enrich our academics, change our outlook and create further opportunities to take the state to global benchmarks in higher education. - Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister ost bifurcation, State Government accorded top priority for starting higher educational institutions promised under the State Reorganisation Act. With the cooperation from the Centre, Andhra Pradesh has ensured that many of these institutions started functioning, enabling local students to gain access to premier institutions. Five institutes already functioning include- IIM at Visakhapatnam, IIT and IISER at Tirupati, NIT at Tadepalligudem and IIIT at Kurnool while process is on to construct new buildings. The IISER, to come up in Tirupati will be the sixth one in the country and is meant for basic science education and research. IIT-Tirupati, which is being mentored by IIT-Chennai, is operating temporarily from one of the campuses in Tirupati and later move into its own campus at Merlapakka village close to the temple town. The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy will function from academic year 2016-17 from Andhra University premises. The proposed Energy University, being set up at Penugonda in Ananatapur district, and Logistics University, being established at Kakinada, will start functioning from the next academic year. AP’s New Institutions: w All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) at Mangalagiri w Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) at Tirupati w Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Tirupati The IIIT is being set up in Sri City, Satyavedu Mandal, Chittoor district. IIIT Kurnool initially would function from campus of IIITDM Kancheepuram, while the permanent campus would come up at Kurnool. Of the remaining, Tribal University will come up in Relli village of Kothavalasa mandal in Vizianagaram for which 526 acres of land was identified, while the Central University would be set up in 491 acres in Anantapur. Both expected to function from the new academic year 2016-17 after completing procedural formalities. JUNE 2016 Foundation stone was laid for Agriculture University in Guntur district, and for AIIMS at Mangalagiri where 183 acres of land was alienated. Towards this end, Andhra Pradesh Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act was passed. Foreign Languages The Government is encouraging universities to teach foreign languages. Already, Andhra and Nagarjuna Universities have taken up Japanese language teaching. The Government is also supporting launch of massive open online courses for certificate and diploma courses. Choice Based Credit System has already been introduced since 2014-15 academic year. Skill Development The Government had signed an MoU with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for improving employability of students. The Government is also proposing to establish a Skill Development University. v 51
