Tuition: $575 / Studio Fee: $75

CONCEPT: Paper, bamboo and string have been used for centuries to create kites in an astounding number of the world’s cultures and countries.
This workshop introduces the art and craft of kites using a variety of
techniques from photographic processes and printmaking to painting,
collage and sculptural experimentation. Students concentrate on the
basics of working with the simple materials of bamboo and paper to
create new flying forms for catching air in the winds and sky.
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Photo processes include digital imagery with scanning and printing output possibilities onto Japanese Kozo paper and other
lightweight surfaces. Students may bring photographic files to work with.
Other processes include traditional ink and brush on paper, handprinting,
collage and bamboo framing techniques. The sky’s the limit!
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Water-based screen printing techniques with
tools, paper and fabric.
ACTIVITIES: We begin with a slide presentation about the World of Kites
and then construct multiple kites from traditional forms to studentdesigned experimental kite forms. On our final day we enjoy an early
evening of kite flight.
FACULTY: George Peters is internationally renowned as a kite artist and studio artist working in drawing, painting, graphic design, installation sculpture,
environmental works, theatrical design and public art. His early influences
of Japanese kites and the art of bamboo and paper craft evolved into his
use of the modern materials of nylon, fiberglass and carbon fiber framing.
Melanie Walker works in alternative photographic processes, digital and
mixed-media in addition to large-scale photographic installations and
public art. Her awards include NEA Visual Arts Fellowship, a Colorado
Council on the Arts Fellowship and an Aaron Siskind Award. She’s a
professor in the media arts area at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Her work can be found in numerous collections including San Fransico
Muesum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the
Center for Creative Photography.
CONCEPT: In this printmaking workshop for teens we use a variety of
screen printing techniques to make prints on paper, unique posters and
original t-shirts. Students design images, squeegee ink through screens
and learn the tricks of multiple-color registration. Teens leave the workshop with a variety of new printmaking skills and lots of t-shirts and
posters for friends, family and their growing art portfolios.
ACTIVITIES: Each day, students design and print in selected media, building up from single-color prints to more complex, multicolor prints. Some
casual discussions and critiques with examples from Anderson Ranch
Editions. The emphasis is on active work and experimentation with
screen printing methods.
FACULTY: Josh Meier is currently the Studio Coordinator of Painting and
Printmaking at Anderson Ranch. He holds a B.F.A. from the University of
Kansas and has received fellowships from the New York Studio School
and Anderson Ranch. He is primarily a painter, but also makes prints,
sculptures and videos. He has recently shown in group exhibitions at
the Kansas City Artists Coalition, Spencer Museum of Art and Wonder
Fair in Lawrence, Kan.
