Direct Carving in Wood
CONCEPT: This workshop covers the design,
planning and execution of direct carving in
green wood. Participants are encouraged to
bring sketches of projects they are interested
in making. We discuss different approaches
to design and sources of inspiration while
exploring a range of possibilities, from sculpture to vessels and furniture. We learn to cut
and square a block of wood, determine scale
and layout and delve into carving, drying and
finishing.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Green wood. Hand carving with a mallet and gouge; carving and finishing techniques utilizing hand power tools:
grinders, power planes, gas and electric chainsaws. Tool safety and maintenance.
ACTIVITIES: Slide talks, demonstrations of carving techniques, various approaches to hand
tools and power tools for carving and refining.
Several finishing techniques are discussed as
we work on a project of our own choice or, if
preferred, an assignment from Howard.
FACULTY: Howard Werner has a degree in woodwork and furniture design from The School for
American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology. He has been awarded grants from the
NEA and the New York State Fellowship for
the Arts. His work is in many collections including the Museum of Arts and Design, the Mint
Museum and Yale University Art Gallery.

Studio Intensive: integrating
SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
CONCEPT: In this workshop, we focus on conceptualizing and creating sculpture using steel
as a supporting structure with ceramic components. In the metal studio we make structures
and observe patterns in nature that can inform
our work. In the clay studio, we create objects
that implement our ideas, making them tangible and whole. We explore basic handbuilding
techniques, methods of altering clay bodies
using various additives, mixing and layering
clay bodies, and manipulaion techniques for
t
altering wet clay surfaces. Finally, we turn
our attention to the mechanics of assembly
and installation. Faculty introduces post-fire
surface treatments, including grinding and polishing techniques. Working in this structured
process creates opportunities to expand our
artistic expression.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Porcelain, stoneware, oxidation and reduction kilns fired to cone 6; slips
and glazes, clay body manipulation, clay body
additives, steel, extruding and forming clay;
wheel throwing, handbuilding, myriad types of
carving and embossing; post-firing sanding and
grinding. Forging, welding and grinding.
ACTIVITIES: Morning and afternoon demonstrations and extensive individual instruction with
dedicated work time. Demonstrations to cover
basic fundamentals of metal working and
ceramic processes. Slide talks and field trips
in the afternoon. Students will work in both
sculpture and ceramic studios.
