SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Flexible, durable, soft, seductive,
warm, acoustically dampening, water resistant
and lightweight: industrial felt is astoundingly
versatile. This hands-on workshop explores
industrial felt as its core material. We fabricate
small objects in industrial felt using ready-made
patterns and generate independent sculpturalsketches to share and discuss as a group.
Our templates guide scale models that in turn
translate our work into full-scale pieces. We
leave lots of room for both rigorous design and
freeform fabrication in approaching our work.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Steel bar, rod and plate,
die design and fabrication, and safe and efficient use of the hydraulic press. Cold pressing
stock under 1/4” and hot pressing textures,
heavy stock and compound curves; MIG & TIG
welding, plasma cutter and torch work.

CONCEPT: Tired of straight lines? In this workshop, we bend and move heavy steel with
grace. Our main tool is a 25-ton Dake electrohydraulic press. With this force, we design
dies that efficiently and easily cold-form 3/4”
rod and 1/4” plate and hot form much thicker
stock. Our goal is to “geek out” about technique, realize the potential of this machine and
customize it to our imaginations. Vivian shares
ways of utilizing this potential on small and
large projects through die development and jig
and fixture systems.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Industrial felt in a range
of thicknesses; safe, relevant cutting and hand
tools; introduction to stitching and fastening
techniques including snaps, rivets and grommets; paper and cardboard maquettes to
design and troubleshoot; fundamental skills
necessary to translate scale model to full size
using graph paper, cardboard, calipers, compass and other measuring implements; collaboration and critical discussion.

ACTIVITIES: We work towards developing handson skills rather than individual projects. We start
with basic shapes (saddle, sphere, cylinder) and
progress into more challenging techniques,
including hot pressed textures and forming. We
balance hands-on studio time with technical demonstrations and problem solving. As a group, we
also design and fabricate dies to use in class.
FACULTY: Vivian is a designer/maker working in
New England. Her work is featured in numerous collections including the Smithsonian’s
Renwick Gallery, MFA Boston, the Brooklyn
Museum and Public Art-Portland, Maine. She
holds an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of
Art and was a resident artist at SUNY Purchase
and Penland School of Crafts.
