Though sculpture is often conceived of on a monumental scale, small sculptures can actually be more intimate, immediate, accessible and affordable. Working on a small scale can be an artist’s method for the generation of ideas, or a perfect introduction for the 2-D artist to branch into sculpture. CONCEPT:  Understanding the fundamental concept of form, where geometry and art intersect, is key to developing a language in sculpture. Form, along with the basic elements of art, are the building blocks of 3-dimensional work. This class explores the fundamentals of form: cubes, cylinders, cones, spheres from a classical perspective. We create forms by applying traditional and modern techniques to sheet metal, then explore what happens when we marry the forms; when planes intersect and more complex forms result. The class applies and works with different surface treatments and considers the way texture and color further characterize the sculptures. A strong grasp of these basic techniques provides a firm ground on which to build work CONCEPT:  This workshop is designed for the bronze-casting beginner who has no previous experience with the lost wax process of cast bronze sculpture. It is structured to engage the student in a nine-step process from wax pattern construction through finishing and patina. Repurposed Material MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Small sculpture construction techniques, including the cutting, assembly and joining of repurposed materials. Carpet, foam, paper, leather, sandpaper, plastic sheeting and found objects. We experiment with a variety of joining methods including gluing, wiring, sewing and nailing. The Ranch provides some materials and students are encouraged to bring their own as well. ACTIVITIES:  Demonstrations, individual and group feedback, group discussion and ample studio time. FACULTY:  Elizabeth Ferrill received her M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is featured in solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. She was an artist-in-residence at the Bemis Center for Cont
