Waterbase to Solar Plate:
Woodblock Monotype
monotype methods and polymer plate Marcia Weese
Sue Hover Oehme
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: This straightforward monotype process expands into more technical, non-toxic,
polymer plate etching over the course of the
week. The same image will be developed and
extended, employing both techniques and utilizing the strengths of each to create imagery.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Water-based, non-toxic
monotypes, color layering and transition to ink
wash drawings on vellum; solar plate printing
techniques.
ACTIVITIES: We begin with water-based monotypes printed from painted sheets of vellum.
Gradually we move through color layering and
transition to ink wash drawings, eventually
exposing them onto polymer solar plates. Our
focus is on color mixing and proofing as many
variations as possible. The last class is a short
critique of the work we produce.
SKILL LEVEL: I
CONCEPT: This workshop is comprised of a
series of lessons in spontaneity at the press.
Using plywood plates, stencils, direct drawing
transfers and ghost prints, we generate many
variations of monotypes. We learn methods to
manipulate and integrate figure and ground,
creating works on paper that resonate. We
experience freedom within the medium as our
prints magically emerge.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Plexiglas and plywood
plates with oil-based inks. Demonstration of
two specific techniques, including “Paul Klee”
- drawing directly on inked plates - and “Wipe
Away” - making stencils to use in a reductive
process. We build the ground with various textures to create surprising and exciting results.
ACTIVITIES: Demonstration of techniques; individual attention and group critiques to encourage our work and our focus. Emphasis is on
diving in and working freely with experimentation at the core.
FACULTY: Susan Hover Oehme is the owner
of Oehme Graphics in Steamboat Springs,
Colo., an internationally recognized print publisher. Prior to OG, she was the master printer
of Riverhouse Editions and master etcher at
Tyler Graphics. She has collaborated with Fred
Tomaselli, Frank Stella, Joan Mitchell, John
Walker, Nancy Friese, Diana Cooper, Melissa
Meyer and Louise Fishman, among many others
over the past 30 years.

FACULTY: Marcia Weese received her M.A.
from Hunter College, N.Y. Her approach to
the monotype reflects her background in sitespecific sculpture, building layers of color, texture and “carving” into fields to reveal hidden
images. Her work is featured in galleries and
public and private collections across the U.S.

Relief Printing &
the Art of the Graphic Novel
Johanna Mueller
SKILL LEVEL: II - III
CONCEPT: Great graphic novelists including Lynd
Ward, Fritz Eichenberg, Barry Moser and many
more have worked in the media of relief printing to create their illustrative work because of
its direct, penetrating and unequivocal graphic
quality. Often fine art relief prints remind us
of our favorite literary tale as they were so
often used as chapter headings or illustrations
accompanying text. We utilize these historical
literary references as source inspiration and
build our own modern stories.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Basic relief carving techniques on linoleum and engraving on plastic
plates; printing, simple bookbinding and layout. Carving techniques, grayscale, emotive
imagery and use of text. We explore how story
books and graphic novels react and respond to
relief printing methods to maximize concept,
form and evocative storytelling.
ACTIVITIES: Alternating between demonstration
and studio days, the first week focuses on carving techniques, constructing a graphic image in
black and white, and relief printing techniques.
The second week present demonstrations in
layout and book design and allow for independent experimentation with carved plates to produce a plethora of book forms and prints.
FACULTY: Johanna Mueller received her M.F.A.
from George Mason University. Her prints
can be found at Leon Gallery in Denver and
in the permanent collections of The Hamilton
Museum of Wood Type, Two Rivers, Wisc.
