Matt Christie, Clearing Elizabeth Ferrill, Sale Jean Gumpper, Sunrise July 7 - 11 July 14 - 18 July 21 - 25 lithographic techniques transfers Jean Gumpper Matt Christie Elizabeth Ferrill SKILL LEVEL: II - III SKILL LEVEL: I CONCEPT: Lithography is often considered the printmaking medium most closely allied with painting and drawing. This workshop explores lithographic printmaking techniques utilizing aluminum plates. We work with direct-drawn plates using litho pencils, crayons and washes to photographic and digitally-generated films exposed on pre-sensitized photographic plates. We examine basic plate and press set up and operation, etching and inking processes, photo-litho applications, paper preparation and color registration. CONCEPT:  Monotypes are often described as “painterly prints,” but using Mylar to make hand-cut stencils yields a more graphic, cleanedged effect. This workshop is open to painters and printmakers alike who are intrigued by the process of creating one-of-a-kind prints. Stencil methods are introduced in addition to mark-making processes, background blends, gum Arabic transfers and other fascinating techniques. Students have opportunities to translate drawings, paintings and photographs into the print form using Plexiglas plates as printing surfaces. Pencil to Pixel: a survey of MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Plate preparation and layout, drawing materials and techniques, plate processing, inking techniques and press operation. Creating films; exposing, processing and printing photographic litho plates. ACTIVITIES: Demonstration of lithographic process and technique coupled with individual work time; class demos with examples from Anderson Ranch archives; individual conferences, group and individual critiques, and discussions about printmaking and art. FACULTY:  Matt Christie has served as Artistic Director of Printmaking at Anderson Ranch and as a professional printer at Shark’s Ink in Lyons, Colo. He received his M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and his work is found in numerous private and corporate collections. He currently teaches printmaking at the University of Colorado-Boulder.   www.mattchristieart.com Tuition: $875 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1075 Studio Fee: $100  Code: R0606  Enrollment Limit 10 Monotypes: stencils, blends and MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Inking of plates, printing, press use, paper handling and monotype processes, including stencils, blends and image layering. ACTIVITIES:  Demonstrations, individual and group critiques, group discussions and ample studio time. FACULTY:  Elizabeth Ferrill received her M.F.A. in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. Elizabeth was an artist-in-residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Neb., and the Studio Coordinator of Painting and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch. She is currently a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno.   www.elizabethferrill.com Tuition: $875 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1075 Studio Fee: $100  Code: R0707  Enrollment Limit 10 Woodcut in the Landscape SKILL LEVEL: II - IV CONCEPT: This workshop explores connections between the natural world and the physical processes of carving wood and printing layers of ink. In the reductive woodcut process, ink is applied onto paper in a series of transparent and opaque overlapping layers. Gradually these layers build up into a completed image. We examine the balance between carefully planning the print and being open to the unexpected possibilities inherent in the process. We work from direct observation of the natural surroundings and envision how constructed and imagined environments can become visual metaphors. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Techniques include but are not limited to carving, transferring images to blocks and color ink mixing; relief printing from plywood blocks with oil-based inks using a press and by hand; relief stencils, pochoir techniques using gouache, monoprint possibilities, registration techniques and chiné colle. ACTIVITIES: Students work intuitively and from drawings, collages and/or photographic images to create prints through the color reduction process, allowing time for individual experimentation. Content and process are discussed through demonstrations and discussions. Several field trips provide time for observation. FACULTY: Jean Gumpper is a visiting professor and Mellon Artist-in-Residence at Colorado C
