April Vollmer, Delirious Birds and Bees Michael Krueger, New Pony Charlene Liu, Untitled June 9 - 13 June 23 - 27 June 30 - July 4 woodblock of control Charlene Liu April Vollmer Michael Krueger SKILL LEVEL: I SKILL LEVEL: I - II CONCEPT: Mokuhanga is the traditional printing method of Japan, the same technique that was used to create classic ukiyo-e prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige during the Edo period. “Moku” means wood and “hanga” is translated as printmaking. Mokuhanga is printed with watercolor and gouache using a handheld baren—a pad of twisted cord covered with paper, cloth and bamboo leaf—on handmade Japanese paper. With precise registration, rich color and a connection to an important chapter in print history, this is a great way to create colorful, nuanced prints without solvents or a press. CONCEPT: This course approaches intaglio from a painterly perspective, with a focus on fabricating a variety of full color prints from a single plate. We learn simple intaglio techniques such as line etch, soft ground, white ground and ground lift techniques to create several unique plates. The goal is to break down traditional intaglio into a medium that can be fluid, free and a little out of control. Participants are introduced to a myriad of techniques and encouraged to select the processes that best suit their ideas. Mokuhanga: water-based Color Intaglio: cheap, fast and out MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Techniques to design, cut and print an edition. Historical overview of Japanese woodblock; the use and maintenance of Japanese cutting tools, the kento registration system, printing with a baren, use of water-based pigments and a discussion of “washi,” handmade Japanese paper. The week begins with history, registration and transferring an image, followed by cutting blocks, proofing and printing. Our final afternoon is reserved for class discussion.
