Students can choose to work in 2-D painting and collage, relief work or sculpture through the creation of multiples. Those wanting to explore 3-D encaustic techniques learn wax casting and building, using plaster, clay, latex and found and fabricated object transformation. We explore and discover new avenues through this seductive, translucent medium. CONCEPT: This course explores the natural world as a source for abstraction, using the land, sky and plant forms around Anderson Ranch as inspiration. Working in basic drawing media, we approach abstraction from many angles. We make sculptures from natural forms to use as a basis for drawing. We may mimic natural processes such as dripping or erosion to create work, incorporate natural materials into our drawings, or create color “translations” of various sites. We share image presentations, demonstrations, on-site sketching and studio work with emphasis on process, ideas and individual growth. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Encaustic painting techniques. Choosing a substrate, mixing medium, mixing encaustic paint from oil paint, xerox and color transfers, collage techniques; a variety of surface techniques including stencils and masks, incising, oil pastels, pigment sticks, metal leafing, indirect and direct transfers, graphite/carbon paper and encaustic tools. Students are encouraged to bring reference materials, collage materials; photographs, text, 2- and 3-D porous and nonporous surfaces.
