Small-Format Painting
Painting in the Moment:
developing the visual vocabulary in
Teresa Booth Brown
abstract painting
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Small works of art can elicit a special kind of focused attention and be as potent
and important as their larger counterpoints.
They are also easy to travel with or to make
when work time or studio space is limited or
non-existent. This studio workshop focuses
on making big work on a small scale. We will
explore working small through the creation of
individual projects as well as investigate methods for the generation of ideas, the creation of
good work habits, and setting up a small-scale
studio practice.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Oil paint, water-based
paint, drawing media, and collage. Students
are asked to bring materials for a planned project. Each student will work on the creation of
20 small works.
ACTIVITIES: Slide presentations and discussion, technical demonstrations, exercises and
individual work time, daily discussion with
instructor of ongoing work, as well as group
critiques.

SKILL LEVEL: III
CONCEPT: This workshop is about the exploration and development of the artist’s personal
style and approach to making art. Understanding what defines our own practice and how
it is a direct extension of our personality and
experiences is a key component in defining
a personal style and vision. We examine the
language that each of us uses to create work
in order to better understand our unique visual
vocabulary. Our practices spark experimentation, spontaneity and the intuitive process in
order to create a dialogue between our internal
artist and our creations.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Abstract drawing and
painting techniques. Students are encouraged
to bring a variety of mediums of their choice.
ACTIVITIES: Students work on self-defined projects with a focus on studio time. Daily personal
and group discussions and critiques.
Engaging Abstract Painting

SKILL LEVEL: IV, portfolio review required
CONCEPT: This is an up-the-ante painting and
critique workshop for advanced artists who
desire constructive criticism to take their work
to the next level. Studio and critique time is
complemented by slide presentations and discussions on contemporary abstract painting
strategies and practices. Participants should
come prepared to paint in media and subjects
of choice. Class paintings generate individual
and group critiques emphasizing process,
intentionality, the painting body and the visual
articulation of ideas through materiality and
abstraction. Technical and formal concerns are
addressed in relation to content.
