Working outside the White Cube: Color & Form in Oil
site-specific, ephemeral, and public Paul Collins
intervention art
SKILL LEVEL: I
Dahlia Elsayed
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: This workshop explores the development and production of ephemeral work in
nontraditional locations (outdoors and indoors),
temporary interventions, object-based performance and art that exists intentionally outside
of the white cube. This is a week of process and
hands-on making for artists who have been thinking about expanding their work into more experimental forms, or who are working on a project
that doesn’t fit into traditional exhibition modes.
Projects can span from subtle environmental
interventions and temporary sculpture to collaborative and socially-engaged works. We also
address low-tech and high impact, community
engagement and participation, sourcing sites,
permissions, documentation and opportunities.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The workshop is open
to all media and techniques. Nontraditional
materials are encouraged. Together we work
to transform ideas into feasible production.
ACTIVITIES: All activities are geared towards
the development and production of individual
projects. In addition to making, we engage
in short lectures, readings and related slideshows, group dialogues and critiques.
CONCEPT: Find your voice through the magnificent medium of oil painting. We focus on fundamentals, emphasize seeing and depicting
color and form and develop content strategies.
Instruction is focused on imparting clear strategies to help you succeed and progress in this
luscious art form.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with oil
paint, various oil media and pencil. Techniques
include color mixing, lighting and perception,
plein air painting and equipment care and
selection.
ACTIVITIES: The first day offers an overview of
materials and techniques: color mixing, brush
care, palette maintenance, medium usage and
studio safety. We devote mornings to limited
assignments and afternoons to self-guided
work and group discussions. Students receive
one-on-one instruction and participate in group
demonstrations.
FACULTY: Paul Collins is a painter currently working in Nashville, Tenn. He has taught extensively and shown his work at various galleries
in Nashville, New York and San Francisco. He
holds an M.F.A. from Yale University.

Painting Lessons from
Modern Art
Holly Hughes
SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
CONCEPT: This class mines the legacies of several major artists and movements of the late
19th and 20th centuries. We feed our painting
practice by developing greater understanding
and use of approaches and strategies central
to the language of painting. In a menu-based
approach, we create a customized selection
of projects from a list including impressionism, fauve color, cubism, surrealism, plastic
automatism, abstract expressionism, color
field painting, pop art and conceptual and postmodern strategies.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Many different techniques of historical paint applications ranging
from the representational to the totally abstract
and all places in between.
ACTIVITIES: Presentations on movements,
lots of hands-on studio time and plenty of
constructive critique sessions inciting change
and experimentation with form and creation of
meaning. We share our current work in class
or one-on-one with the instructor. This is a fun,
intense and totally immersive work week.
FACULTY: Holly Hughes is on sabbatical leave
from her position as professor and department
head of painting at the Rhode Island School
of Design. Her practice includes oil painting,
gouache, monoprints and ceramic projects.
Recent shows include the Hyde Museum’s
Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region and the
Granoff Art Center at Brown University.
