Advanced Topics in Painting
Craig Drennen
SKILL LEVEL: III - IV
CONCEPT: This course is designed to improve
our artwork through full immersion in the discourse of contemporary painting. We examine
theory and critical dialogue as it pertains to
individual practice and explore the history and
craft of paintings within a contemporary context. Through readings and discussion we have
opportunities to broaden the scope of our practice and continue to hone our artistic voice.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: This course uses the
term “painting” in the most expanded contemporary manner. We engage in individual critiques, group critiques, reading assignments,
group discussions and the creation of new
work. Each participant is expected to bring the
materials and equipment necessary to produce
individual work.
ACTIVITIES: Discussions in response to assigned
readings, critical discussion of artists’ work,
creation of new work, and visits to museums
and galleries in Aspen.
FACULTY: Craig Drennen is represented by Samsøn gallery in Boston and Saltworks in Atlanta.
His most recent solo exhibition was at Ellen
de Bruijne Projects in Amsterdam. His work
has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America and The New York Times. He teaches at

Portraiture from Collage to
Conceptualism
Ryan Burghard & Ben Buswell
SKILL LEVEL: I
CONCEPT: In this course we investigate a myriad
of ways to construct, deconstruct and recontextualize the human portrait. Studying historical and contemporary examples of portraiture,
we explore how meaning is created around
identity and ideas of the individual through
process and materials. Students are encouraged to hone their technique while incorporating new concepts and ideas. This class relies
heavily on participation, with emphasis placed
on experimentation and discovery in both tangible and intangible ways.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: A variety of media including drawing, painting, collage and nontraditional
(i.e., sculptural) use of 2-D materials.
ACTIVITIES: Presentations by instructors and
topical group discussions and activities begin
each class. A new experiment or project is introduced daily. The majority of class time is spent
on individual work and one-on-one direction by
instructors.
Picture Material
Annie Lapin
SKILL LEVEL: III
CONCEPT: Whether nuzzling up to an Albert
Bierstadt landscape or looking closely at a
Rothko, the physicality of painting rivals and, at
times, supersedes image in our experience of
the work. This course invites you to delve into
the visceral nature of painting. From color, luster and brushstroke to the surface chosen as
substrate, we examine the balance between
images, their construction and their subsequent impacts on final works. This class serves
individual interests and expands our repertoire
of techniques.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We cover various historical techniques in painting, understanding types
of brushes and paint load, glazing and the chemistry of various paints. Students are encouraged
to bring any media (i.e., graphite, charcoal, clay,
or spray paint) to explore during class.
ACTIVITIES: Morning warm-up exercises and
lessons. Painting occasionally from life and
occasionally responding solely to materials.
Studio time for individualized projects outlined
at the beginning of the week. Group discussions of work and a brief slide lecture.
FACULTY: Ryan Burghard has exhibited at various galleries and institutions including Disjecta
Contemporary Art Center, IGLOO and Viewing
Space Gallery in Melbourne. He teaches at
Oregon College of Art and Craft.
