Craig Drennen, Servant 12 Ryan Burghard, Lady Mountain Annie Lapin, Bright Seeps Forward To Real July 7 - 11 July 7 - 11 July 14 - 18 Advanced Topics in Painting  Craig Drennen SKILL LEVEL: III - IV CONCEPT:  This course is designed to improve our artwork through full immersion in the discourse of contemporary painting. We examine theory and critical dialogue as it pertains to individual practice and explore the history and craft of paintings within a contemporary context. Through readings and discussion we have opportunities to broaden the scope of our practice and continue to hone our artistic voice. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: This course uses the term “painting” in the most expanded contemporary manner. We engage in individual critiques, group critiques, reading assignments, group discussions and the creation of new work. Each participant is expected to bring the materials and equipment necessary to produce individual work. ACTIVITIES: Discussions in response to assigned readings, critical discussion of artists’ work, creation of new work, and visits to museums and galleries in Aspen. FACULTY: Craig Drennen is represented by Samsøn gallery in Boston and Saltworks in Atlanta. His most recent solo exhibition was at Ellen de Bruijne Projects in Amsterdam. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America and The New York Times. He teaches at Georgia State University and served as dean of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.   www.craigdrennen.com Tuition: $920 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1120 Studio Fee: $75  Code: D0612  Enrollment Limit 10 Portraiture from Collage to Conceptualism  Ryan Burghard & Ben Buswell SKILL LEVEL: I CONCEPT: In this course we investigate a myriad of ways to construct, deconstruct and recontextualize the human portrait. Studying historical and contemporary examples of portraiture, we explore how meaning is created around identity and ideas of the individual through process and materials. Students are encouraged to hone their technique while incorporating new concepts and ideas. This class relies heavily on participation, with emphasis placed on experimentation and discovery in both tangible and intangible ways. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: A variety of media including drawing, painting, collage and nontraditional (i.e., sculptural) use of 2-D materials. ACTIVITIES:  Presentations by instructors and topical group discussions and activities begin each class. A new experiment or project is introduced daily. The majority of class time is spent on individual work and one-on-one direction by instructors. Picture Material  Annie Lapin SKILL LEVEL: III CONCEPT:  Whether nuzzling up to an Albert Bierstadt landscape or looking closely at a Rothko, the physicality of painting rivals and, at times, supersedes image in our experience of the work. This course invites you to delve into the visceral nature of painting. From color, luster and brushstroke to the surface chosen as substrate, we examine the balance between images, their construction and their subsequent impacts on final works. This class serves individual interests and expands our repertoire of techniques. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We cover various historical techniques in painting, understanding types of brushes and paint load, glazing and the chemistry of various paints. Students are encouraged to bring any media (i.e., graphite, charcoal, clay, or spray paint) to explore during class. ACTIVITIES:  Morning warm-up exercises and lessons. Painting occasionally from life and occasionally responding solely to materials. Studio time for individualized projects outlined at the beginning of the week. Group discussions of work and a brief slide lecture. FACULTY: Ryan Burghard has exhibited at various galleries and institutions including Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, IGLOO and Viewing Space Gallery in Melbourne.
