PAINTING & DRAWING
The Painting & Drawing program offers the opportunity to work with an exciting
range of highly accomplished artists and extensive media. We maintain a wide
diversity of subject matter and approach, while tailoring each class to a particular level of
experience. Our classes combine an intense, hands-on art making experience with critical
feedback that will propel your studio practice throughout the year.
The Ranch’s spacious and bright painting facilities are housed in the Wyly Painting
Building. Each painting student has access to studio and travel easels, palettes, work
tables, odorless solvents, rags and an extensive collection of hand and power tools.
Classrooms are further equipped with a computer, Wi-Fi access, printing, scanning and
projection capabilities.

SKILL LEVEL: I
CONCEPT: The diverse landscape and brilliant
light of the West offer a perfect setting to learn
the skill and craft of watercolor. We begin with
basic color mixing exercises to achieve luminous effects with a transparent medium, and
then practice a variety of techniques to create
a suite of works on paper. This class is perfect
for those completely new to the medium.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Palette layout, color mixing techniques and paint handling techniques
to develop several finished works on paper.
Plan for outdoor sessions working in the field.
ACTIVITIES: Studies and exercises are conducted in the studio in the mornings. Afternoons are spent out in the field observing the
natural environment. Demonstrations and lectures, paint mixing exercises, hands-on experimentation and individual work time. Individual
and group discussions.
FACULTY: Jenene Nagy has had solo exhibitions
at the Portland Art Museum, PDX Contemporary Art and Disjecta Contemporary Art Center.
She has received grants from the Foundation
for Contemporary Art, the Ford Family Foundation and the Oregon Arts Commission. Her
work was named by the Huffington Post as one
of the Northwest’s Top Ten Exhibition Picks
of 2010. She currently serves as the Artistic
Director of Painting, Drawing and Printmaking
at Anderson Ranch and is a partner in the independent curatorial project TILT Export:.
