Allen Jensen, Various Bowls Mark Supik, Taps July 21 - 25 July 28 - August 1 Allen Jensen variations on a theme Woodturning for Beginners SKILL LEVEL: I - II CONCEPT:  Bowl turning is one of the most popular forms of woodturning, but it can be a difficult process to master. Allen guides this class through the entire process of bowl making, from log to finished work. He demystifies the bowl gouge and makes it an effective and efficient wood-removal tool. Since pretty wood only takes us so far, we concentrate on good design and decorative techniques to set our work apart. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood; green and air-dried bowl blanks. Techniques include proper wood selection, correct use of the bowl gouge and body positions; sanding, drying, various decorative techniques, sharpening and finishing. ACTIVITIES: After a basic introduction to tools, woods and techniques, Allen demonstrates his craft and guides the class through each step of the process. Intensive turning sessions allow students to develop skills and techniques. Discussions at various points along the way illustrate our progress. FACULTY: Allen Jensen has been a woodturner for 17 years and a professional bowl maker for the last seven. He is the current symposium director for the Rocky Mountain Woodturning Symposium in Loveland, Colo. He has presented at the Utah Symposium, AAW in St. Paul and Louisville, and the Rocky Mountain Symposium. His work is available in fine craft galleries across the country. This class explores the relationship between a group of turned objects that are varied slightly to create a unified piece. Learn how to improve your spindle turning skills, but also to increase your visual vocabulary by varying traditional woodturning details. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood, air-dried and kiln dried; milk paint and oil for finishing. We use spindle gouges properly and efficiently and practice duplicating skills. ACTIVITIES: Each day begins with a practice of spindle turning techniques followed by a daily project. Each project is made up of multipleturned pieces, each varying slightly and relating to one another to create a unified design idea. Projects might include candlesticks, beer taps, three-legged stools or strung turned-bead necklaces. For more information visit www.furnituresociety.org, email [email protected] or call 828-255-1949.
