WOODTURNING The Woodturning program unites exciting workshops with extraordinary faculty. Workshops range from traditional woodturning to innovative approaches in contemporary art and design. If you want to advance your skills and expand your creative imagination, then we have a workshop for you. The Pryor Turning Studio is outfitted with nine workstations, each equipped with a lathe and set of woodturning tools, faceplates and jaw chucks. WOODTURNING SKILL LEVELS:  Alan Stirt, Bowl Open to all - Students of any skill and knowledge level. Level I - Students are new to woodturning and have no formal training. Level II - Students have a basic understanding of fundamental turning tools and techniques and are comfortable using and sharpening bowl gouges and spindle gouges. Level III - Students have significant turning experience using both green and kiln-dried lumber. Students are capable of selecting wood, able to use and sharpen gouges, and familiar with basic principles of 3-D design. Students have some formal technical training in woodturning and have a portfolio of their artwork. Level IV - Students have advanced skill and knowledge of woodturning. Students are highly motivated, and have multiple portfolios of their artwork. June 9 - 13 The Fundamentals of Open Bowl Turning  Alan Stirt SKILL LEVEL: Open to all CONCEPT:  Learn the basics of bowl turning from start to finish, from wood selection and design to shaping, sanding and finishing. We cover the fundamentals of tools and wood for beginners and skills for more efficient turning for experienced woodturners. Our focus is on the skills you need to keep learning. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Green and dry wood. Mastering the bowl gouge and shear scraping. ACTIVITIES:  Shop safety, how to sharpen and use bowl turning tools. We select and process our wood, covering jaw and vacuum chuck holding methods. Turning, sanding and finishing the bowl. Each student completes a minimum of two to three open bowls of his or her own design. FACULTY:  Alan Stirt has been a professional woodturner for more than 38 years. His work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Smithsonian, the White House and the American Craft Museum.
