2014 RECOGNITION DINNER The 17th Annual Recognition Dinner will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Each year, Anderson Ranch Arts Center celebrates creativity and service to the arts by recognizing the accomplishments of key figures in the art world. All proceeds support Howard Werner, Ash Stack Thomas Hucker, Illuminated Cabinet #1 August 25 - 29 September 8 - 26 Direct Carving in Wood  Howard Werner SKILL LEVEL: Open to all CONCEPT:  This workshop covers the design, planning and execution of direct carving in green wood. Participants are encouraged to bring sketches of projects they are interested in making. We discuss different approaches to design and sources of inspiration while exploring a range of possibilities, from sculpture to vessels and furniture. We learn to cut and square a block of wood, determine scale and layout and delve into carving, drying and finishing. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Green wood. Hand carving with a mallet and gouge; carving and finishing techniques utilizing hand power tools: grinders, power planes, gas and electric chainsaws. Tool safety and maintenance. ACTIVITIES: Slide talks, demonstrations of carving techniques, various approaches to hand tools and power tools for carving and refining. Several finishing techniques are discussed as we work on a project of our own choice or, if preferred, an assignment from Howard. FACULTY: Howard Werner has a degree in woodwork and furniture design from The School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology. He has been awarded grants from the NEA and the New York State Fellowship for the Arts.
