Direct Carving in Wood
Howard Werner
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: This workshop covers the design,
planning and execution of direct carving in
green wood. Participants are encouraged to
bring sketches of projects they are interested
in making. We discuss different approaches to
design and sources of inspiration while exploring
a range of possibilities, from sculpture to vessels and furniture. We learn to cut and square a
block of wood, determine scale and layout and
delve into carving, drying and finishing.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Green wood. Hand carving with a mallet and gouge; carving and finishing techniques utilizing hand power tools:
grinders, power planes, gas and electric chainsaws. Tool safety and maintenance.
ACTIVITIES: Slide talks, demonstrations of carving techniques, various approaches to hand
tools and power tools for carving and refining.
Several finishing techniques are discussed as
we work on a project of our own choice or, if
preferred, an assignment from Howard.
FACULTY: Howard Werner has a degree in woodwork and furniture design from The School for
American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology. He has been awarded grants from the
NEA and the New York State Fellowship for
the Arts. His work is in many collections including the Museum of Arts and Design, the Mint
Museum and Yale University Art Gallery.
