But for the creative designer and maker, it is also a powerful tool for realizing more intimate forms of self-expression. This workshop aims to demystify the CNC process and explore its artistic potential. CONCEPT: This course is a weeklong exploration of the occasional chair form through a variety of unconventional materials, connections and approaches. Students design and construct at least one unique chair with an emphasis on utilizing unfamiliar, found, salvaged or recycled materials and nontraditional construction techniques. We explore the chair as both form and idea, as well as the meanings and importance of material choices and process. This course is an exercise in streamlining the design process to be as efficient and experimental as possible, while never losing sight of functionality and comfort. Each student designs his or her own process for creating seating. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood parts and computer workstations: MasterCam software. A limited number of stations with Rhino software will be available for use. Advanced CAD skills welcome, but not required. Some computer skills necessary.
