But for the creative designer and maker, it is also a powerful tool for realizing more intimate forms of self-expression. This workshop aims to demystify the CNC process and explore its artistic potential. CONCEPT:  In this fast-paced workshop, we explore 3-D computer modeling and its potential within a sculpture practice. Students are introduced to a variety of software packages to create sculptural elements via 3-D printing and CNC machining. We discuss methods of combining new 3-D digital technology with a variety of sculptural techniques while exploring some of the most readily available CAD software packages and 3-D printing technologies available. We examine various concepts, including hybrids, inventions and numerous strategies for digital fabrication. CONCEPT: The CNC (computer numerically controlled) router has become a tool for artists and creators to push the boundaries of what is possible. This course uses the CNC router as a tool for streamlining and creating furniture and objects out of plywood. As an introduction to CNC, we learn how to calculate feed rates and chiploads based on router bit and material selection. We design in Rhino and learn to use the CNC router to bring ideas to life. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood parts and computer workstations: MasterCam software. A limited number of stations with Rhino software will be available for use. Advanced CAD skills welcome, but not required. Some computer skills necessary. ACTIVITIES: Starting with an overview of CAD technology, basic wood-milling operations and parts preparation, we develop and practice the skills to use the CNC router in a more creative w
