NEW MEDIA
The New Media program offers workshops in video, animation, multimedia, physical
computing and programming. All workshops are rooted in the same idea: powerful art
requires rigorous inquiry into techniques and ideas.
The media labs are color-managed and equipped with 21-inch iMacs, digital media
software, including the Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro.
NEW MEDIA SKILL LEVELS:
Open to all - Students of any skill level with no experience, who want training in video
or new media practices such as computer programming, computer graphics, interactive
art, or physical computing. Basic computer literacy helpful.
Level I - Students have basic computer skills and knowledge, and are familiar with
technical terminology. Students have an interest in new media arts and integrated
practice. Basic computer literacy required.
Level II - Students have strong computer skills, some basic level programming
experience in software like Processing, Java or equivalent, or familiarity with video
editing in Final Cut, Premiere or equivalent.
Level III - Students have strong computer skills and experience with programming
languages and software. Students have projects that demonstrate basic knowledge.
Level IV - Advanced level class where students are self-motivated and have strong
programming skills, knowledge of software and terminology, a portfolio of work in the
genre, and can keep up with a fast-paced class.

Graphic Design & Data
Visualization in Processing
Rune Madsen
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: This workshop introduces the concepts of programming through exercises
inspired by the field of graphic design. We
investigate subjects such as composition, color
theory and typography, but use code—instead
of a pencil or a mouse—as our primary tool.
We learn the basics of using variables, functions and operators in code, and how to create
dynamic, generative designs with repetition,
randomization and transformation. This is an
introductory level workshop that requires no
former knowledge of programming or graphic
design - visual artists are most welcome.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The workshop is taught
in the programming language Processing. We
learn to write software that generates visual
designs for use in screen or print-based work.
ACTIVITIES: Lectures about the concepts of
programming, exercises and applications of
concepts in code, and small presentations that
showcase our work for the class
FACULTY: Rune Madsen is computational artist working in the fields of programming and
graphic design. His work includes both physical and digital projects, such as gallery installations, online new media and interactive visuals.
A former developer for the New York Times, he
now works for O’Reilly Media and serves as an
adjunct professor in the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University.
