Rune Madsen, Speech Comparison (detail) June 30 - July 4 Graphic Design & Data Visualization in Processing Rune Madsen SKILL LEVEL: Open to all CONCEPT:  This workshop introduces the concepts of programming through exercises inspired by the field of graphic design. We investigate subjects such as composition, color theory and typography, but use code—instead of a pencil or a mouse—as our primary tool. We learn the basics of using variables, functions and operators in code, and how to create dynamic, generative designs with repetition, randomization and transformation. This is an introductory level workshop that requires no former knowledge of programming or graphic design - visual artists are most welcome. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The workshop is taught in the programming language Processing. We learn to write software that generates visual designs for use in screen or print-based work. ACTIVITIES:  Lectures about the concepts of programming, exercises and applications of concepts in code, and small presentations that showcase our work for the class FACULTY:  Rune Madsen is computational artist working in the fields of programming and graphic design. His work includes both physical and digital projects, such as gallery installations, online new media and interactive visuals. A former developer for the New York Times, he now works for O’Reilly Media and serves as an adjunct professor in the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University.   www.runemadsen.com Tuition: $975 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1175 Studio Fee: $50  Code: P0511  Enrollment Limit 10 NEW MED I A  27
