SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
CONCEPT: The digital age is giving documentary
photographers and photojournalists extraordinary new ways to tell stories with greater
authorship and control. This workshop focuses
on how to create a personal documentary
project and get it seen. The ultimate goal is to
learn how to find a subject that speaks to a
personal passion, document it in a compelling
and unique visual style, and disseminate the
work effectively to change people’s minds and
help write history. We show how to develop an
idea, get funding, get access, determine goals
and disseminate artwork to create an impact.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital SLR, digital image
making, image editing and printing with Adobe
Lightroom.
ACTIVITIES: Three days of shooting and review
sessions plus a group critique of each student’s portfolio/essays. Discussions and practical experience for richer storytelling, image
editing and narrative development. Additional
topics include managing digital workflow, creating multimedia projects, developing a portfolio, social media, instagram and multimedia
storytelling.

SKILL LEVEL: II
CONCEPT: Coffee table books begin with personal portfolios. This is a course designed
to guide artists into the fascinating process
of making a photographic artist book. We
study the genre’s history and various ways
to approach it in a contemporary context. Our
focus is in pushing the bookmaking process
with an overall sense of exploration and experimentation. We explore concept, the sequencing of images, design, typography, paper
choices, binding, printing and distribution.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Adobe Photoshop and
Adobe InDesign to lay out our books in the
computer. Laser Jet printers and Inkjet printers to preview and edit our work. Some simple
bookbinding techniques are explained and
demonstrated for experimentation.
ACTIVITIES: Daily group presentations and discussions around the bookmaking process with
a focus on building a more effective project.
Studio time for editing, organizing, designing
and producing individual books.
