This workshop focuses on how to create a personal documentary project and get it seen. The ultimate goal is to learn how to find a subject that speaks to a personal passion, document it in a compelling and unique visual style, and disseminate the work effectively to change people’s minds and help write history. We show how to develop an idea, get funding, get access, determine goals and disseminate artwork to create an impact. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital SLR, digital image making, image editing and printing with Adobe Lightroom. ACTIVITIES: Three days of shooting and review sessions plus a group critique of each student’s portfolio/essays. Discussions and practical experience for richer storytelling, image editing and narrative development. Additional topics include managing digital workflow, creating multimedia projects, developing a portfolio, social media, instagram and multimedia storytelling. The Photographic Artist Book & Self-Publishing  Ofer Wolberger SKILL LEVEL: II CONCEPT:  Coffee table books begin with personal portfolios. This is a course designed to guide artists into the fascinating process of making a photographic artist book. We study the genre’s history and various ways to approach it in a contemporary context. Our focus is in pushing the bookmaking process with an overall sense of exploration and experimentation. We explore concept, the sequencing of images, design, typography, paper choices, binding, printing and distribution. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign to lay out our books in the computer. Laser Jet printers and Inkjet printers to preview and edit our work. Some simple bookbinding techniques are explained and demonstrated for experimentation. ACTIVITIES: Daily group presentations and discussions around the bookmaking process with a focus on building a more effective project. Studio time for editing, organizing, designing and producing individual books. FACULTY:  Ed Kashi is a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator. A member of the photo agency VII, Ed exhibited worldwide and won numerous awards, including UNICEF’s Photo of the Year 2010. His project, “Life with Maggi,” was exhibited in London, Berlin, Stockholm and Quebec. He’s written 12 books and was recently awarded the Printed Matter Award for Artists.
