A Sense of Place
Color Photography
CONCEPT: Drawing upon the traditions of documentary, journalism, formalism and American
realism, this workshop investigates a variety
of strategies for enriching a picture’s sense
of place. For subject matter, we explore a
variety of historical towns located near Anderson Ranch. We are encouraged to develop a
point of view that creates a strong presence
of place within our images and employ digital
techniques in the studio to subtly enhance the
our visions.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Adobe Lightroom and
Photoshop, digital printmaking. Our dual focus
is on shooting in the field and making largescale inkjet prints in the studio.
ACTIVITIES: After early morning shoots and a
break for lunch, we process our files and prepare for an afternoon slide show. Rebeca presents a daily slide lecture about the history of
photography and other mediums. Towards the
end of the week, we focus on making large inkjet prints inspired by our off-site excursions.
CONCEPT: The color of light describes the world
in a particular visual language. In this workshop, we learn to use the language of light
and color to express emotion, create mood
and bring psychological import to digital photographs. Creative shooting, shared print production, critiques and discussion increase our
awareness of digital imaging as craft—and the
printed piece as a physical manifestation of
feeling. Perception, creativity and technique
intertwine to build the foundation for a deeper
understanding of color as language, one of the
most expressive tools available to artists.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Capturing in Raw format
and printing using Adobe Photoshop.
ACTIVITIES: Daily field trips to learn how to capture a sense and feeling of place by shooting
under variable natural light and weather conditions. We use different exposure techniques to
reveal subtleties in color. We explore a variety
of ways to further produce and enhance the
quality of color in Adobe Photoshop, bringing
our images from capture to print in class.
Portable Flash & Natural Light
CONCEPT: The photographer’s challenge in creating a portrait of a person is often rooted in
issues of light. This course provides
