We investigate concepts and strategies in shaping a body of work that is powerful, well edited and sequenced. We advance our shooting and printing skills while making technical choices that best suit our individual style and photographic content. This is the perfect course for advanced photographers interested in creating solid portfolios to represent their core photographic visions. We practice the art of writing an artist statement and take day trips to photograph sites around the Roaring Fork Valley. CONCEPT:  Don’t let the technical side of digital photography intimidate you! This workshop teaches you how to use digital media with confidence—from metering and exposure to equipment, composition, file management and creative effects. Learn about camera functions and when to use specific ISO, shutter speeds and apertures to capture the image you want. Then explore simple post-production techniques to realize your artistic vision. You also learn to evaluate and critique images. ACTIVITIES: Daily activities include presentations on artists’ projects, readings and field trips. Each student works on an individual project. CONCEPT: Building on the foundations covered in Getting Started with the Digital SLR, this course reviews the basics of photography, increases students’ understanding of digital shooting techniques, and introduces new technical and conceptual skills. Topics covered include: advanced camera functions; an introduction to flash and user-friendly lighting techniques; using complex compositional elements of photography, and shooting a thematic series. Daily critique and shooting sessions in the picturesque Rocky Mountains address technical and aesthetic considerations. The goal to inspire and challenge us to make conscious decisions and produce compelling photographs. ACTIVITIES: Daily lectures plus hands-on technical demonstrations address digital camera and lens functions, shooting, downloading and editing. We practice every day by shooting during field trips into the magnificent Colorado landscape, then sum up our experiences in group discussions and critiques. ACTIVITIES: Interactive classroom sessions and daily shooting assignments that build on the day’s lessons provide a deeper understanding of the tools and techniques available in digital photography. Through critiques, we gain the ability to thoughtfully discuss our work. FACULTY: Angela Faris Belt is a fine-art photographer with work exhibited widely and held in numerous collections.
