Exploring Visual Storytelling
Photo Encaustic
CONCEPT: Every picture does indeed tell a story,
and in this class, we explore a new landscape
of visual storytelling through a hands-on understanding of different approaches and the use
of different tools. We work through the entire
process, from identifying subjects to building
the narrative, making images and examining
different photographic styles and techniques.
We practice editing and presentation of our
work. Whether you’re trying to break into magazine work, or hoping to better document your
next vacation, the emphasis here is on finding
your own vision.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital photography using
your choice of tools, including your iPhone or
digital SLR and Adobe Lightroom.
ACTIVITIES: Lectures and discussions; location
photography; editing and sequencing including digital workflow, presentations and class
critiques. One-on-one interaction and group
discussions.
FACULTY: Jason Houston has more than 20
years of experience working internationally on
assignments for editorial and organizational
clients. He is a fellow at the International
League of Conservation Photographers and
served as photo editor for Orion magazine
from 2004-2012. He is a board member for
Blue Earth Alliance.

CONCEPT: Ready for a creative adventure that
combines old and new? Merge encaustic painting techniques with digital photography using
collage, painting and transfer processes. In this
workshop we use the encaustic medium to
transform digital prints by adding layers of meaning. Project assignments and demonstrations
teach encaustic painting techniques while we
engage each day in discussions about our work.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Encaustic painting and
collage on wood panels and heavy papers;
digital printing on fine-art digital papers; Adobe
Lightroom, Photoshop and laser transfers.
ACTIVITIES: We demonstrate painting and collage techniques, perform digital printing and
develop photo-encaustic collage projects. We
use digital prints of our own photographic
imagery supplemented by found imagery,
objects and collage materials.
FACULTY: Mia Semingson works in photography, video, performance and artists’ books.
She received her M.F.A. from the University of
Colorado at Boulder and subsequently taught
photography and book arts there for 11 years.
She exhibits her work nationally and internationally in Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and
France. Mia owns and runs Two Hands Paperie, a unique store in Boulder, Colo., which
promotes book and paper arts, encaustic and
mixed media, letterpress printing and locally
handmade products.

The Tao of Photography
CONCEPT: Revitalize your vision while exploring
your relationship to subject, camera and self. In
this course, we learn to deepen visual awareness
while clarifying our approach and making images
that are more personal and meaningful. Our photography becomes more powerful by cultivating
simplicity and developing the power of intuition.
We develop visual strength by getting in touch
with our inner selves and using that awareness
to deepen the connection with our chosen subject. We also consider lighting, composition and
exposure issues with a constant focus on integrating practical advice into personal practice.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Inspiration is sparked by
a balance of conversation, meditation, sharing
photos, reviews of past work, critiques, writing exercises, readings, poetry, photographic
exercises and assignments—or by whatever
means necessary.
ACTIVITIES: Site-specific photographic exercises and assignments pertinent to internal
and external experience and growth. Mornings
are spent in class and on photographic exercises; afternoons on field trips with Doug, as
well as completing assignments or critiques of
work in progress.
FACULTY: With a B.F.A. from the University of
Michigan, Doug’s personal vision explores the
spiritual aspects of people and place. Exhibited and published internationally, grants and
commissions fund much of his personal work.
Doug’s extensive teaching experience includes
numerous workshops worldwide that emphasize vision over the mechanics of camera use.
