Ranch Romance: fall in love with
Studio Intensive: integrating
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Join Philadelphia potters Sandi and
Neil to refine and enhance your handbuilding
techniques. We demonstrate traditional methods including coil building, soft slab building, a
stiff slab project and simple molds. We learn
how to make various forms from a basic cylinder of clay with a focus on vessels and animal
forms. Come with a “beginner’s mind,” open
to new ideas. Good craftsmanship is primary,
so we pay attention to details and finishing
touches— emphasizing the exploration of form,
process and learning—not finished pieces.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Stoneware clays and handbuilding techniques. No glazing or glaze firing.
ACTIVITIES: Daily demonstrations focused primarily on pottery vessels and animal forms.
FACULTY: Sandi Pierantozzi received a degree in
visual communications from The Art Institute
of Philadelphia and served as a resident artist
at The Clay Studio. Her work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly. She has exhibited
nationally and taught numerous workshops in
handbuilding techniques.

CONCEPT: In this workshop, we focus on conceptualizing and creating sculpture using steel
as a supporting structure with ceramic components. In the metal studio, we make structures
and observe patterns in nature that can inform
our work. In the clay studio, we create objects
that implement our ideas, making them tangible and whole. We explore basic handbuilding
techniques, methods of altering clay bodies
using various additives, mixing and layering
clay bodies, and manipulaion techniques for
t
altering wet clay surfaces. Finally, we turn
our attention to the mechanics of assembly
and installation. Faculty introduces post-fire
surface treatments, including grinding and polishing techniques. Working in this structured
process creates opportunities to expand our
artistic expression.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Porcelain, stoneware, oxidation and reduction kilns fired to cone 6; slips
and glazes
