Throwing demonstrations explore the gestural qualities of porcelain through functional pottery. We make work that is thrown and immediately altered off the wheel and examine line and gesture. We work with thick slip as a way to express yet another kind of line that highlights the material in a different way. All work is fired in the soda kiln. Anderson Ranch thanks its educational partners for supporting our Ceramics program with their products and services. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We cover many techniques of throwing and altering pottery. Emphasis is on the application of slip: timing, thickness, the do’s and don’ts. We fire the soda kilns to finish the work, all at cone 10. ACTIVITIES: Lectures on slip and clay plus an indepth discussion of firing and the use of soda. We make pots daily with demonstrations in the morning and after lunch. Demonstrations for finishing include glazing, kiln loading and firing. Individual attention and discussions are ongoing throughout the entire session. FACULTY:  Matt Long received his M.F.A. from Ohio University. He is an associate professor of art and the graduate coordinator at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.   www.fullvictory.com DIVERSIFIED CERAMIC SERVICES, INC.
