Andrew Martin, Kimono Teapot Sam Chung, Cloud Bottles Sara Ransford, Looking Glass Series June 2 - 13 June 16 - 27 June 16 - 20 Andrew Martin Sam Chung SKILL LEVEL: II - IV SKILL LEVEL: I - III CONCEPT: The fired clay form is a blank canvas, ready for the embellishments that define its character and style. In this workshop, we focus on designing and slip casting complex forms with “simple” molds. Our exploration includes teapots, hollow-cast and solid-cast forms, cups and saucers, lidded vessels and other shapes. We use paper cut-outs to develop the designs and build the prototypes with a variety of different systems and materials. We make sprigs and stamps and play with ways to alter castings. Our goal is to explore new or latent ideas, inviting participants to arrive with clear goals and a willingness to take risks. CONCEPT: How do we translate designs, images or drawings into 3-D pottery forms? We take a twofold approach to this question: first, we explore the making of pottery forms via slab construction using customized paper templates. We examine how to integrate geometry into round pots by altering wheel-thrown forms. Second, we look at how pattern and imagery can be assimilated into form through china painting. Our main goal is to expand our vocabulary of pottery form by embellishing our pottery surfaces with imagery and design. Slip Casting: complex forms MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Paper cut-out shapes, tar paper, masonite, plaster, cone 6 casting slip, marbleized colored clays and slips, and oxidation firings. ACTIVITIES:  Each morning we’ll review the previous day’s progress; there will be daily and impromptu demonstrations. We fabricate prototypes using paper cut-out shapes, make molds of these prototypes and use brushes and glazes to create surfaces. FACULTY:  Andrew Martin is the author of The Essential Guide to Mold Making and Slip Casting. His work is known for fluidity, glazing processes, volume, structure and innovative forming. His pots are inspired by his exploration of English, Asian and Islamic pottery traditions. Andrew founded Ceramics Academy.   www.martinporcelain.com Tuition: $875 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1275 Studio Fee: $155  Code: C0102  Enrollment Limit 12 Translating Flat into Form MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Cone 10 porcelain and/ or grog-less buff stoneware; drawing and cutting custom templates using newsprint and tar paper for slab construction; throwing simple forms and altering shapes by cutting into forms and adding slab components; china painting: mixing paints, application methods and firing processes. ACTIVITIES: Morning demonstrations and time for individualized instruction in the afternoon. We focus on making pots during week one and glaze, firing and china paint in week two. Presentations of surface decorations. FACULTY:  Sam Chung is an associate professor of ceramics at Arizona State University. He has exhibited at Harvey/Meadows Gallery, AKAR Gallery, Greenwich House Pottery and Lacoste Gallery. His work is included in the collections of T
