Chic Batik
Katherine Stark
June 28 - July 2
Ages: 9 to 12 / 1:30 - 4:00 pm
Tuition: $275
Code: K0919 Enrollment Limit: 15
Stories from the Valley:
Experience the magic of batik, a southeast
Asian form of fabric design. We bring this
centuries-old art form into the 21st century with colorful designs, bold images
and intricate patterns, exploring a variety
of batik methods such as monoprinting
and stenciling. We work with the waxes
and inks traditionally used in Indonesian
batik. Fabric for dying will be provided,
but you may also bring plain, light-colored
cotton clothing to print. Hang your one-ofa-kind batik art on your wall, sew it into
pillows or wear it as a shawl!
Katherine Stark received her BA in Studio
Art from Lewis & Clark College, and has
previously been the Children’s Program
Intern at Anderson Ranch. She enjoys
traveling and teaching others about art
techniques from around the world.

Beadweaving: the Gourd Stitch
Wendy Ellsworth
Ages: 11 and up / 9:00 - 11:30 am
Tuition: $275
Code: K1024 Enrollment Limit: 10
Join the rich tradition of Native American
beadwork. Practice one of the most versatile bead weaving stitches: the gourd
stitch, also known as the peyote stitch.
The flat form of the stitch becomes a
wearable necklace or bracelet while the
sculptural form becomes a tube-shaped
pen cover. Learn both forms of this beautiful beaded design by working with glass
seed beads in vibrant colors.
Wendy Ellsworth is a nationally and
internationally known seed bead artist, maintaining a private studio at her
homes in Pennsylvania and in Colorado.
Her career in beading spans 40 years,
and she teaches classes in beadweaving
techniques around the United States and
abroad. Her book, Beading–The Creative
Spirit, was published in 2009.

a documentary workshop
In Partnership with Aspen Writers Foundation
Kate Lapides
Ages: 13 to 17 / 1:30 - 5:00 pm
Tuition: $450 / Studio Fee: $25
Code: P0406 Enrollment Limit: 10
Concept: The Roaring Fork Valley is a landscape rich with characters who call this
singular place home. Join us to create a
small collection of their stories: their passions, their struggles, their relationships
to the community and the landscape surrounding them. We use this project as a
pathway to teach the foundations of documentary photography and multimedia.
Media & Techniques: Students explore
digital photography and digital editing with
iPhoto and iMovie software. Students
may elect to use simple sound recording
equipment for interviews. Students photograph using digital cameras.
Activities: We use daily shooting assignments to investigate how photographic
choices of framing, point of view and
selective moments convey emotion and
stories. Students explore the ethics of
documentary work and the process of
establishing rapport with subjects as they
gather content and then edit that content
into compelling visual narratives.
Faculty: Kate Lapides’ compelling work
as a documentary photographer has taken
her around the globe to photograph for
organizations such as Save The Children
and The International Rescue Committee.
She is a two-time recipient of an Individual
Artist grant from the Colorado Council on
the Arts. Her recent collaborative multimedia projects have received grants from
The Big Sky Institute of Montana and The
Maine Humanities Council. Her work is
exhibited nationally.

Layers of Meaning:
Photoshop for art making
Isaac AlaridPease
Ages: 13 to 17 / 1:30 - 5:00 pm
Tuition: $425 / Studio Fee: $75
Code: K0511 Enrollment Limit: 14
Concept: Layering is the conceptual
anchor and vehicle as we move beyond
familiar symbols into altered visual language. Create new effects using Photoshop to manipulate images by overlapping,
underlapping, varying transparency and
merging. Explore the meanings and ideas
behind layered art: What are we trying to
communicate? How can we represent the
same idea with different techniques?
Media & Techniques: We use the layering tool in Adobe Photoshop to compose
scanned images, hand painted surfaces
and photos. Specific Photoshop techniques include rotating, distorting, enlarging and reducing. We learn to extract
imagery and repeat processes to achieve
new results. We work on MacBook computers and use digital cameras, scanners
and Epson Stylus printers along with traditional hand painting techniques.
Activities: We paint, scan, capture images
via digital photography and then compose
the images on the computer. We learn
computer, camera and traditional painting
techniques, create multiple compositions
and print our favorites to take home.
Faculty: Urban folk artist Isaac AlaridPease
has taught art workshops in Albuquerque,
and Santa Fe, New Mexico as well as
Puebla, Mexico. His most extensive experience has been as program director, workshop instructor at Working Classroom Inc.,
an acclaimed street conservatory for youth
in Albuquerque.
