Concept: Create three-dimensional paintings
using contemporary painting techniques and
concepts. We emphasize the fundamentals
of artistic expression as students learn how
materials and process affect the physical and
conceptual aspects of their work.
Concept: Experience focused work time in the
studio with a range of materials, group and
individual critiques, and informative conversations with artist James Surls. We look at sculpture studio practice and how it applies specifically to each student. We discuss topics that
are important to sculptors and artists working
today. We mine James Surls’ vast experience
in order to learn more about studio practice
including work habits, collector/gallery relationships, and formal concerns.
Sculpture as Painting
Media & Techniques: We use acrylic paint
as our primary painting medium with mixedmedia techniques.
Activities: We begin by creating a threedimensional base or frame. Then we stretch
canvas over the frame and prepare the surface. Finally, we paint the surface to complete
the work.
