In those early days of Japanese woodcut prints, it was simply easier to register color to line, than line to color. Media & Techniques: Techniques include creating linear detail with dry point techniques, working on a printing press, hand printing color plates in the traditional moku hanga style, then adding subtle surface detail and contrast. Concept:  Create a print focusing on multiple variations rather than a single finished edition. We investigate monoprinting in a variety of one-of-a-kind prints with minimal platework, experimenting with multiple outcomes. Come with ideas about how single images could work well together, but without a firm idea of how the final images will look. Bring drawings, photos, images and plates you have collected or made over the years to combine with beautiful prints. Activities:  We have daily demonstrations on inking, plate wiping, carving and printing techniques, and we invite one-on-one discussions on image making, personal style and visual vocabulary. Media & Techniques:  Techniques include multiple drop printing, relief rolling, stencils, gum transfer, basic photo-etching and polyester litho plates. We also go over printing and platemaking. Faculty:  Hiroki Morinoue introduced moku hanga Japanese woodblock printmaking techniques to Anderson Ranch in 1993. He is an innovative printmaker who applies and introduces newer techniques to challenge his old and new students. He has also worked in collaboration with other Ranch artists with print projects. His multimedia works are in collections at Hawaii State Art Museum, The Contemporary Museum of Hawaii, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, City of Honolulu, the Ueno no Mori Museum of Tokyo, the National Parks collection in Maryland and the De Young Museum print collection in San Francisco. Activities: We learn technique while working toward finished prints. There are demonstrations on z-acryl, Pronto- Plates, Xerox transfers, stenciling, à la poupée and chine-collé, held at the beginning of each class. We end the week with a short critique of our finished prints. Matt Christie    Skill Level: Open to all Concept:  Learn basic lithography using polyester “Pronto-Plates,” a less technical and less toxic process than traditional stone or plate lithography. Media & Techniques: We cover image generation using a variety of tools such as pens, spray paint, Xerox/laser prints and Sharpie markers. Activities: We begin by demonstrating methods of image generation. Then we cover proper plate processing and inking along with paper preparation and handling. Demonstrations are given in the mornings while afternoons are reserved for work time and one-toone instruction. Faculty:  Matt Christie is the artistic director for printmaking at Anderson Ranch and also directs Anderson Ranch Editions, a fine art print publishing studio. He has 29 years experience collaborating with artists on print projects and has programmed our printmaking workshops and residencies for many years. www.mattchristieart.com Faculty: Seattle-based artist Amanda Knowles earned an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
