Transforming Landscape:

Skill Level: Open to all
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Delve into technique and content in
waterbased screen printing: How do you effectively handle the materials, process and cleanliness of the print? How do you interpret the
process in a creative way, push beyond technique and find creative methods to question
art, society, life, culture, landscapes and politics? We combine safe and easy printing techniques with alternative printmaking to express
your individual insights.
Concept: This workshop will explore connections between the subject matter of landscape
and natural phenomena and the physical processes of carving wood and printing layers of
ink. With reductive woodcuts, ink is applied
onto paper in a series of transparent and
opaque overlapping layers. Gradually these layers build up into a completed image. Participants will have the opportunity to work from
direct observation of the natural surroundings.
Media & Techniques: We use monoprints,
painted stencils, Rubylith hand cut stencils,
direct photo emulsion, multiple printing of layers, four color screen printing and alternative
printmaking procedures.
Media & Techniques: We learn paper and
wood characteristics along with carving, transferring images to blocks, color and ink mixing.
We explore relief printing from plywood blocks
and oil-based inks, both using a press and
by hand. Also included are relief stencils and
pochoir techniques using gouache and registration techniques.
Activities: We discuss hand and computer
printmaking, homemade screens, water-based
inks and paper. Each student completes an edition of prints using Hunt Speedball screen filler,
drawing fluid and photo stencil methods.
Faculty: John Hitchcock is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His current works depict personal, social

National Graduate Seminar Fellowship at New
York University; Vermont Studio Center Full
Fellowship; and the Vilas Associate Grant, University of Wisconsin. www.hybridpress.net

taught through demonstrations as well as
individual and group discussions of ideas and
techniques. There are blocks of time for individual studio work and experimentation.
Faculty: Jean Gumpper is a Visiting Associate Professor at Colorado College in Colorado
Springs. Her work has been shown extensively
in the US as well as in Canada, Germany,
Hong Kong, Japan, Nepal and Sweden. Jean
received a Visual Artist Fellowship award from
the Colorado Council on the Arts.
