Introduction to Etching:
tradition and innovation
Print Fusion: traditional
printmaking and digital printing
Kate Leonard
Jennifer Ghormley
Skill Level: Open to all
Skill Level: II - III, Photoshop experience required
Concept: Jump-start your work in intaglio as
you investigate the visual grammar of etching.
We introduce traditional etching techniques and
a simple but innovative transfer method that
integrates photographic material into conventional etching. Beginners leave with a strong
technical foundation in etching processes.
Concept: Explore contemporary print media:
tradition and innovation. Investigate practical
questions such as, What is a pre-coat? Can I
print on fabric or found papers? How do I print
an etching or woodcut plate on a digital print?
Designed for printmakers and artists eager
to explore new media, we combine digital
images with traditional print processes to create a cohesive print.

Robynn Smith
Skill Level: Open to all
Media & Techniques: We approach the etching plate as a malleable physical surface that
can be moved, changed, and manipulated with
acids and mordants. We use hard ground, soft
ground, Xerox/gum transfer resist ground and
chine-collé.
Activities: We begin with a series of small
plates that provide a personalized technical
database for each student. By midweek we
begin work on two larger plates. Each day we
have demonstrations, critiques and assisted
work time introducing approaches to developing imagery and techniques for transferring
drawings to plates. Each student receives an
annotated technical booklet produced for the
workshop by the instructor.
Faculty: Kate Leonard is a Professor of Art at
Colorado College where she directs the Graphics Research Lab, an innovative space for Printmaking and Photography. She received her BA
from Grinnell College and her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Kate’s work has been exhibited throughout the
US as well as in Iceland, Finland, China, Germany, Slovenia and Sweden.
