PRINTMAKING
The Printmaking program reflects the
exciting evolution of print media in recent
years – a mix of tradition and innovation,
the elemental and the high tech. This year,
a diverse selection of workshops covers
woodcut, nontoxic printing, screen, intaglio
and digital applications. Workshops are
offered for every skill level.

Bookbinding for Artists

Low-Tech Printmaking:

Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: We work with a variety of papers
and cover materials to make three book structures with unique characteristics that make
them appropriate for different purposes. We
evaluate the features of each book and investigate ways to combine elements to construct
books, incorporating components of each to
make new variations. The class includes variations on pamphlet, accordion, and long-stitch
journal bindings. The workshop gives artists
and designers the technical skills needed to
incorporate their work into the book format in
a deliberate and innovative way.
Media & Techniques: We explore the materials of handmade paper, book board and leather.
In addition, we spend part of one day making
paste papers to use as text pages in our books
and as cover paper. We cover sewing by hand,
backing cloth for use on books and essential
basics in bookbinding; we also discuss the
properties of bookbinding materials.
Activities: There are daily step-by-step demonstrations of how to complete each book.
There are two presentations of books made
using the structures covered in the workshop
as well as an overview of artist’s books and
fine press books. We work side-by-side as during demonstrations. There is ample time for
individual projects.
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Learn a variety of printmaking techniques without the need for a fully-equipped
printing studio. We introduce pochoir stencilmaking, trace monotypes, Xerox transfers and
relief processes. Experiment with these methods in the studio and incorporate them into
your work.
Media & Techniques: We use pochoir stencil
making, trace monotypes, Xerox transfers and
relief processes.
Activities: We introduce a new printmaking
process each day. Most of our class time is
spent working in the studio, but daily demonstrations, short lectures and critiques are
also included.
Faculty: Matt Christie is the artistic director for printmaking at Anderson Ranch and
also directs Anderson Ranch Editions, a fine
art print publishing studio. He has 29 years
experience collaborating with artists on print
