Information Visualization &
Radical Cartography
Amber Frid-Jimenez
Skill Level: I - III
Concept: We use Processing, a simple Javabased programming language, to explore contemporary notions of radical cartography and
basic information visualization. Students learn
techniques in visual communication, information architecture and computation through
design exercises, and apply these techniques
to develop a self-defined project. There are
hands-on studio exercises experimenting with
the production of maps that engage critical,
social or personal issues.
Media & Techniques: Students explore hand
drawing, print media, and Processing, a simple
Java-based programming language. Digital
printing techniques are conducted using largescale color plotters.
Activities: Design exercises lead to a longer
self-defined project. There is ample studio
time for hands-on practice and critique. Amber
conducts slide lectures, readings, and group
discussions engaging the theory and history of
mobile cartography and information visualization within contemporary art.
Faculty: Amber Frid-Jimenez is an artist,
designer and technologist whose work confronts issues ranging from politics and surveillance to representations of women in media.
She has presented her work at Banff New
Media Institute, Rhode Island School of Design,
Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution. Frid-Jimenez is a 2008 Rockefeller Foundation New Media Fellow Nominee and is a
graduate of the MIT Media Laboratory.

Introduction to 2D Animation
Dominic Bisignano
Skill Level: I - II
Concept: Learn animation principles by making a personal short film. The workshop covers
fundamental and intermediate concepts including drawing, multi-plane and stop-motion animation. We specifically deal with incorporating
sound (including lip sync). Come with an idea,
then work to bring the elements together with
a sensible pipeline and manageable direction.
Media & Techniques: We use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro and
Soundbooth software. Some basic knowledge
of the software is helpful.
Activities: Students work daily with the
instructor on a personal concept or idea. Some
assignments are individualized to help students work on certain aspects of animated
film making. Mornings consist of software and
technique demonstrations while afternoons
are dedicated to studio work sessions.
