Concept: Hand coloring is as old as photography itself. From gentle tinting to broad painting, a photograph can be made more interesting. Experiment with pigment media on your
photographs, whether traditional photographic
prints or digital output. We use a variety of
photo surfaces and applied media and teach a
broad range of techniques allowing students to
extend their own photographic images.
Concept: Turn the eye toward exploration.
Learn the fine art of storytelling with images in
pure photojournalistic fashion. Immerse yourself in a picture story and think about documenting a scene, finding the universal theme
and giving viewers a reason to care. Combine
basic photographic concepts of light, composition and moment to make storytelling images
from scenes of everyday life.
Concept: Use the “scanner as camera” to
express your visual ideas. The workshop covers the basics of digital scanning and Adobe
Photoshop with hands-on instruction as the
instructor shares her techniques for color
and composition. Students are encouraged to
experiment and explore new ways of working
with light, depth and perspective.
Media & Techniques: Photographic prints on
selected surfaces will be reworked with oil
paint, pencil, ink, watercolor and other media.
Although this is not a photography class, there
are demonstrations of how to produce suitable
images for this purpose.
Media & Techniques: Students shoot with
digital SLR cameras. We process images
with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop
software.
Painting on Photographs
Activities: Each day there are short slide shows,
discussions and demonstrations. Students
spend the majority of the day in supervised studio time with a lot of individual guidance. Short
reviews and assessments of what has been
accomplished are arranged as needed.
Faculty: Kate Breakey has gained international
recognition for her large-scale richly handcolored photographs. Her work has appeared
in more than 70 one-person exhibitions. She
earned her MFA from the University of Texas
in 1991 where she also taught Photography
in the Department of Art and Art History until
1998. Kate’s work is held in many public collections. The first monograph on her work,
Small Deaths, was published by the University of Texas Press. An anthology of her work
“Painted Light” is scheduled for publication in
2010. www.katebreakey.com

The Picture Story
Activities: The workshop begins with portfolio critiques followed by discussion. Students
are assigned a picture story to photograph
throughout the week. Editing and further discussions regarding picture story development,
translation of ideas into visual images and the
identification of story theme will take place
daily. The week culminates with a slideshow
of each students photo story.
Faculty: Cheryl Diaz Meyer received the 2004
Pulitzer Prize with colleague David Leeson for
their images of the Iraq War. She has covered
conflicts in Afghanistan and Indonesia and has
photographed stories throughout the Middle
East, Asia, Latin America and Europe. Her images
are published in several books and extensively in
newspapers worldwide. Her Pulitzer work is on
permanent display at the Newseum in Washington, DC. www.cheryldiazmeyer.com

Scanner as Camera
Media & Techniques: Students work directly
with scanner and computer to create images,
covering the technical basics of scannography
and Photoshop.
Activities: Each day students create new
images followed by group discussion and
critiques. Projects include collecting found
objects to scan and experimenting with layering, pattern making, still life and collage.
