Concept: Explore ways “self” and “other”
can be expressed, examined, created and
conflated through photographic portraiture. In
this workshop students utilize hands-on techniques like freewriting, verbal and nonverbal
activities, portrait and self-portrait exercises,
and “nuts-and-bolts” pointers. We delve into
contemporary and historical examples of portraiture in books, images, essays and film with
special focus on expressions of gender.
Concept: In an era of digital control, the handmade print takes on a special importance and
beauty. The platinum/palladium print is one
of photography’s most beautiful and desired
objects, possessing a depth and charm unrivaled by digital methods. Learn to expertly craft
digital negatives with stunning tonality to create prints with deep blacks, seductive highlights
and lush mid-tones. Moving beyond the straight
platinum print, delve into the world of color with
platinum-over-pigment printing. Burkholder’s
pioneering platinum-over-gold-leaf methods
combine three precious metals in a print.
Concept: Join us for a comprehensive week of
digital processing. Establish a clear and concise
work flow from capture to optimization to final
output. We work with students individually to
guide their digital skills to the next level.

Media & Techniques: We use a variety of fine
watercolor papers and vellums for our platinum/
palladium printing. For our digital negatives, we
use Epson printers with premium grade transparency films. The instructor covers variables
such as coating of the paper, developers, clearing and post-treatment of the print.
Activities: Daily activities are divided between
the digital lab and the classic wet darkroom
where we coat our paper, expose our prints
with UV light and process our prints to completion. We also take two field trips where the
instructor demonstrates shooting techniques.
Faculty: Dan Burkholder’s platinum/palladium and pigmented ink prints are included in
museum and private collections internationally.
Dan has taught at the International Center of
