Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Don’t let the technical side of digital
photography intimidate you. Use digital media
with confidence: from beginning to end, capture to file management. Nurture your creative
side while you take technical control of your
digital SLR camera. Learn to set ISO, shutters and apertures, coupled with a tripod and
specialized filters. Then explore simple postproduction techniques to realize your artistic
vision. We emphasize technical skills, creative
picture making, editing and evaluating images.

Digital Photography
Field Workshop
Skill Level: I - III
Concept: Marry the modern technology of the
digital darkroom with the ancient technique
of encaustic painting and you get a unique
visual vocabulary. Archival inkjet printing offers
endless possibilities for image making while
encaustic paint provides versatile surface quality and sculptural potential. Experiment with
both media and gain a working understanding
of the digital printing process, archival collage
construction and basic encaustic painting.
Media & Techniques: We use encaustic paint
on birch panel or clay board, oil stick, digital
prints on various papers and found collage elements. Techniques include basic Photoshop
image manipulations, basic encaustic painting
techniques and image layering.
Activities: The workshop presents a variety of
encaustic works and demonstrates encaustic
painting techniques and digital printing techniques. We hold studio work sessions, group
discussions and critiques that relate process
to content and explore how they influence the
overall effect of the piece.
Faculty: Miranda Lake is an encaustic collage
artist living in New Orleans. Holding a BA in Art
History from the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, she has honed her skills at Parsons School of Design and the London College
of Fashion. Lake exhibits widely in the US and
abroad, and was included in the prestigious
New Orleans Museum of Art’s Triennial Exhibition Biennial. www.mirandalake.com

Concept: Photograph some of the most scenic landscapes in the West – four locations
near Aspen with mountain views, sparkling
streams, a multitude of wildflowers and
100-year-old artifacts from the mining days.
This ”photographer’s dream tour” reveals
many possibilities that can be revisited later
for in-depth visual exploration.
Media & Techniques: Students shoot with
digital cameras. The workshop includes onsite critiques as the instructor works with
each student throughout the day. Discussions
of relevant issues such as high dynamic range
techniques, black & white conversion, lens
filters and best time of day for working take
place on site.
Activities: The instructor introduces the historical and scenic significance of each location.
Students spend at least an hour at each site
and driving/hiking times are kept to a minimum.
This class meets from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
Faculty: David Hiser is a photojournalist and a
photography educator who has led workshops
and seminars throughout North America. He
has had been published in over 100 National
